What a piece ! I just heard it for the first time in this variation, and it is just great. Orchestra, mixed with some swinging tunes, perfectly played by the Philharmonic Orchestra.

np: TV Themes Medley (Goldsmith conducts Goldsmith)

Actually, I thought that was one of the worst tracks on the disc.... GREMLINS just isn't GREMLINS without the synth.

I agree with Dan. As good as the concert arrangement of GREMLINS was, it didn't come close to the original minus the synths.

The same can be said about Jerry's arrangement for HOOSIERS which was performed live during the '87 concert without the electronics. As good as the performance was, it just didn't quite work without the synths and electronic drums.
Jerry wasn't pleased with the performance hence the absence of it on the concert C.D.

    Dean.

Aw don't let these guys pee on your parade, Phillip. The rendition is not the same as the original with the synths but it's fun just the same.

oh, it's fun certainly, but it has this cheesy "Cincinnati Pops" feeling to it...

The Gremlins version is just dandy and performed with gusto. Probably would have been very hard to reproduce those synths for a concert album.

    Unclench already.

Incidentally the best tracks on the disc are from The Blue Max (and Lionheart).

    NP -- Hamlet, Burwell

No, there's nothing wrong with it. But this rendition of GREMLINS does have an element of "cheese" that I tend to associate with the Cincinnati pops recordings - maybe it's the sonics, or the percussion section.... but it's there.

And the synth version is completely cheese-free, right?

Well, no - but it has a more authentic cheese quality to it, as opposed to the forced "pops" hammy-ness in the concert version.

LOL -- I can't wait to pick this album up. I've been religiously searching around here, but all I can find from Silva is "Best from the West: Volume 2"

I'm looking forward to hearing Blue Max with decent sound quality.

What's wrong with the Legacy disc? I've always really enjoyed the quality on that one.

Yes, but they can't compare to the performance in London last year (is it really nearly a whole year already!?) I'd love to have those on CD with great sound quality - but I'm glad I have those recordings on CD at all.

I feel that the Legacy disc of The Blue Max has as sound quality that is as good as possible with the tapes that were available. The sound quality is just not that good.

    the Legacy disc is fine.

the re-issue disc with the suite on it, is in AMAZING sound, unlike Legacy.

    unclench Jeron!

The sound quality on the new Silva Goldsmith remastered in HDCD in simple spectacular as hell. The Blue Max suite sounds a million times better than the original soundtrack and the performance is much more passionate and heroic sounding. If you have a good sound system with a cd player that can decode a HDCD then you will be blown away. And play this back in Dolby Pro Logic and it is even better!
