What are your guilty pleasures? This is the thread where you must tell all the scores that you love but no one else seems to. Come on out with 'em!

Mine are Randy Newman's Pixar scores. I really love them but it seems like everyone else dosen't.

    Jz

P.S. And no I do NOT like Trevor Rabin.

I often find myself wanting to hear The Perfect Storm. Of course, nobody likes this because it is, well, a recent Horner score.

I also enjoy a few Rabin cues from Con Air and Armageddon. But I must admit, most of his work is crap.

There are other scores that I can't think of off the top of my head, but I know that most of them are by the MV crew.

BTW, I must agree with Jz that Newman's Pixars scores can sometimes catch my ears.

Yeah. From two posts. A whole bunch.

As for me, I fess up to enjoying Horner's theme to "We're Back" and "The Pagemaster" (even though the latter is a rip from Glory and the Land Before Time pasted together).

There are a bunch of scores I love listening to that no one else seems to enjoy.

    Wes Craven's New Nightmare
    Titanic
    Halloween
    Dick Tracy
    Shadows of the Empire
    Basic Instinct

    J.C.

The implication of peer pressure is great. Hence, "a bunch". But hell, every score I listen to is a score that no one (i.e., the population at large) else seems to, from Ben-Hur to American Outlaws), so why make the circle smaller? To make more friends, or less?

Hey Maestro and OHMSS76, with you there. I really like New Nightmare, and listen to Halloween (along with any Carpenter score), and Shadows. I also like Titanic.

Let's start the stupid crap. Guilty pleasure means me able to enjoy a Horner score knowing that it blows. And any John Williams score.

Well...I would guess my guilty pleasures are Francis Lai scores.

As a matter of fact...I recently found a Francis Lai web site and was surprised to find such a great listing of his film work with sound clips.

It would be great if someone else out there has any of his stuff from LP transferred to CD as I'd like to hear more of these scores. I have most of those Japanese SLC CDs that were done several years ago.

My #1 all time favorite guilty pleasure:

Kull the Conqueror by Joel Goldsmith

Oh, those electric guitars just SING on this score! Thanks most likely to the brilliant orchestrations of Nicholas Dodd .

Other stuff that I seem to like that no one else does (but I do not feel at all guilty about ):

Star Trek Generations (the best Trek score by far)
    The Grinch
Jimmy Neutron: Boy Genius (great Debney work!)

    ....and probably many more.

    -Brendan

p.s. the greatest thing about these kind of
threads is that we all end up finding out
that we're not alone in our "odd" film score
tastes and that our "guilty" pleasures really
don't need to be guilty at all.

    Alien 3.
Not many people seem to "digest" this score.
I'm not guilty about listening to it though.
As far as i am concerned i know that it is A MASTERPIECE.

    K

NP: Bram Stoker's Dracula (Wojciech Kilar)*****/***** another great score.

Of course if you actually like something is it really considered a guilty pleasure just because someone else doesn't?

I dunno about the guilty pleasures tag. The scores I used to consider as a guilty pleasure I really don't listen to anymore. I think I've reached the point now where I'm more selective about what I buy and don't grab everything that comes out like I used to. I find myself listening to samples of the score more nowadays than I used to before I buy them.

But since this thread isn't about that here we go:

The Transformers Movie. I used to play the hell out of my casstte, been tempted to pick up the CD.

Armaggedon- starting to dislike this one cause it gives me a headache on most of the action cues.

    Crimson Tide - See Armaggedon

The Musketeer - Not too bad, action material sounds too much like Arnold's Bond material.

Lion King - Songs are good, score a little bland at times.

Deep Blue Sea - I love sharks and score has potential, too much synth though. Would be better if orchestra played alone.

Top Gun - Still rocks after 16 years, wish the film version of the main title was on the disc.

Twister - nice effort, wish there was less electric guitar and a real choir was used though.

Speed - Play this CD while driving in a major city, with alot of traffic and man the adrenaline gets flowing fast.

That should be 'The Cassandra Crossing' (1977) by Jerry Goldsmith.

Hey Mark, your'e not alone. The Transformers" The Movie is one of my favorite films and is an underappreciated score. Though I had recently watched Rocky V and heard Vince DiCola's score there. Both scores sound the same. But to hell with that. Transformers rule!

What constitutes a guilty pleasure score? Something not well-received by the masses? Something not seen as being intelligent and refined? I guess I will also have to list the Transformers movie score by DiCola as a guilty fav. And not the original issue... the full score album released only online and at conventions (I got mine online, in case you were wondering!).

I never feel guilty about listening to Goldsmith scores... except perhaps SUPERGIRL. What a silly-ass film, but that score rocks!

Another guilty pleasure would be Horner's scores for animated films, I think they are often more fun and interesting to listen to than his music for live-action projects!

David Newman's THE PHANTOM might count, as it is an awesome score for another silly-ass flick. Same goes for Kevin Kiner's soaring WING COMMANDER score, great stuff.

You caught me there. I bought Newman's terrific score note knowing what to expect. I'm glad I did.

    The film sucks though...

    Jz

P.S. I also really like Horner's score to The Land Before Time, and The Pagemaster.

NP: 1941 (John Williams) Yes...another GP.

I don't feel guilty about any of them, but:

    Conan the Barbarian
    The Jungle Book
    The Rock
    Dragonheart Theme
    Kimberly Theme
    Shadows of the Empire
and probably some others that just aren't springing to mind right away.
