What a great site! I, being a new fan, was wondering if you veterans could make some suggestions for scores or tracks I should check out based on my favourites which follow:
Braveheart CDs
Gladiator CDs
Dragonheart Theme
Truman sets sail
Love theme from Dances with Wolves
Never an Absolution (Titanic)
The Perfect Storm (title track)
Theme from Contact
Theme from Castaway
Apollo 13 theme / Launch
Harry and Grace make peace (Armageddon)
Plattoon (Adagio)
almost all John WilliamsAny suggestions would be greatly appreciated
As for my suggestion, one of my favourite classical pieces, "Jupiter" by Gustav Holst is used in Chariots of Fire (I think). Check it out and you can tell how it's influenced other movie composers (in my opinion it sounds similar to Bravehearts thems in certain sections). Peace

Welcome to MM.com Ben!I'd try some "Fellowship of the Ring" in your collection. You also sound like a Horner fan so I'd suggest: Glory, Star Trek II and for a recent one, Iris.
And just for kicks, "Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone" by Williams

Welcome Ben. I'm not exactly a veteran (actually i'm relatively new), but it sounds like your tastes are in beautiful piano and violin themes. I've found that Forrest Gump has a great piano theme and likable violins. To Kill A Mockingbird by Elmer Bernstein is another great score. I would also recommend Pearl Harbor. It may not be the best thing, but it has some awesome cues. The American President is also a good score. It's has a beautiful love theme, which is unfortunately overused, but has a grand ending.

Ben, welcome to the board. You sound like a wonderfully enthusiastic chap! I'll stand by Ace and also recommend To Kill a Mockingbird and The American President. Also check out The Patriot by John Williams and Patch of Blue by Jerry Goldsmith.

These are all more than worth a try...Out Of Africa - John Barry
Jane Eyre - John Williams
The Piano - Michael Nyman
and seeing as you don't have much Horner yet you'll probably find A Beautiful Mind original and refreshing, a real good score despite the Horner naysayers around here

As for THE PLANETS you'll find that Mars,Jupiter,Saturn and Neptune in paticular have all been very influential in film music!

...and before I forget Ben...
WELCOME!

Welcome! On the Horner front--don't leave out Willow and Field of Dreams!
And don't listen to Brian...stay away from Harry Potter and get a real Williams' score!

Welcome Ben! My first impression of you wasn't that you were a Horner fan, but that you liked Alan Silvestri! Some of my favorite scores of his are the Back to the Future films and Forrest Gump. Contact and What Lies Beneath are good listens in the film, not necessarily on CD.And don't listen to Quill: get Harry Potter, if only for the tracks "Quidditch Match" and "Chess Game."

You can't mention Goldenthal without INTERVIEW WITH THE VAMPIRE. Sucha gorgeous score, even in its horror moments. He has such a way with instrumentation.

Noticed that you like Silvestri, and I recommend Forrest Gump. Based on the rest of the list, I would also recommend Thomas Newman's Shawshank Redemption, Trevor Jones and Randy Edelman's Last of the Mohicans. If you liked Dragonheart, check out Dragon: The Bruce Lee Story and Gettysburg, both by Edelman as well. May I also suggest anything by Michael Nyman (Gattaca, The Piano, etc.) and most of Ennio Morricone (start with The Good, The Bad, and the Ugly)?
