I know everyone has posted how they listen to scores and what they do while listening, but has anyone actually ever listened to a score without doing anything? Like sitting in a chair and just absorbing the music? Not while in bed, that doesn't count. I can never seem to do it. I always have to be either online or playing a game with the volume down.

I used to do that - would just lie on my bed and listen to a CD (and not sleep).

Haven't been able to do it for a looong time though; there just isn't a chance for me to do that these days....

I can never do that! Although I do play computer games with the game music off. I love to play Need for Speed III to The Peacemaker or Total Recall. It's great!

Any new score I get will only be played when I have no distraction at all. I like to just sit and focus on the music.

If I'm gonna listen to music, then thats all I will do.I can never understand how some people can read and listento music at the same time; I've always felt that music,(Especially Film Music) requires your full attention.
In an ideal world, I'd like to be sitting in a sound proof room with no disturbance and just enjoy my music; although, most of the time I hear Film music accompanied with the sounds of my young kids doing what kids do best...Making noise! Not that I'm complaining, I wouldn't be without them!

Last time I did this was with Spy Game, Lord of The Rings, Harry Potter, and Tron. I was out of work late January and I had to do something to keep from going crazy.

What's funny is, I find myself REALLY listening to a score when I hear it as I work. In college, while suffering through my freshman math courses, I would listen to the score from Speed and the percussion tended to get me motivated to work through the problems. Wished it had helped me in Pre-Calculus, but nothing, not even film music can save you from the daunting attacks of mono. Thankfully, I had a mild case.

Recently, I've done it with Planet of The Apes (Elfman), and I really love the percussion in the tracks, I've come to really enjoy that score. It helps to be able to listen to something while your other motor skills are taken up by mundane tasks, as I now have quite a bit of to do.

So why do I post during work hours? To get a break.

Meantime, I think it's entirely possible you can really appreciate a score you listen to from one perspective already while doing something else. To respect it- well, that's subject to a lot of debate.

I always listen music for the sake of itself. Listening to music as when you read a book. Paying attention. I guess that's why I'm doing so bad in school, hehe, among other things

I totally agree. I find it completely distracting when listening to music and doing homework at the same time. How can I listen and appreciate the music when I'm doing something so stupid

Anyway, I often listen to scores while doing nothing else. I just sit on the couch and crank up the music.

I gotta admit that after a hard days work, it's really nice to throw onto the multi disc player a slew of film scores (sometimes other things), flop back in the chair, beer in hand, cat in the lap, and just plain relax (maybe sorta drift off) while listening to the music.

But the nice thing about listening to music is that one can, if one wants to, do other things at the same time, like reading, or doing domestic chores, or going for a walk (if you have a discman), or pounding away on your computer keyboard, etc.

I'm with John, I never usually listen to the music in computer games (unless of course it's Bill Brown or Jeremy Soule doing the composing). I also listen to The Peacemaker while playing Need for Speed (and while driving in my car, big mistake lol). I've also tried "The Chase" from The Rock while stealing and being pursued in a hummer in Grand Theft Auto 3, now thats fun. Some games like Jedi Kight, and more recently Jedi Outcast have music taken (and remixed) from the star wars films which is very cool. However, they failed to include duel of the fates, which i find strange since the game is primarily sabre dueling. So whenever I jump into a multiplayer game nothing gets the heart racing quite like Duel of the Fates while fighting off 3 other jedi at once. Of course there are those times when I'll just throw something in while I'm studying or typing a paper. However, I find that i do most of my listening in my car, or at my computer.

I can fall asleep to music but I don't like to. And, it takes longer.

I play music while I'm at work shuffling paper, but I can get so involved with what I'm doing that I don't notice it as much. I can play music while I do activities like cooking or eating. I cannot read and listen to music at the same time--one cancels out the other. I can watch movies and listen to the music in them at the same time but sometimes I can't appreciate a score until I hear it on its own apart from the film.

I don't just sit in a chair with my eyes closed listening attentively as often as I used to, but that's the ideal.

I'm with some of you on this one. Ideally I like listening to scores whilst sitting in a big chair, alone, with a cup of lemon tea at hand. I try to get five or six listens in that way, at least until I get to know the score.

But I had a great time listening to BEN-HUR last weekend whilst painting the ceiling. Especially "The Rowing Of The Galley Slaves". Had the work over in a jiffy.

But anything that requires attention, like reading (even the Message Board), gets done in silence.

    Exactly the same here.

JZ: When playing Need for Speed, try listening to Goldsmith's The Mummy - nothing beats that combination! (Another great combination: Unreal Tournament with Rambo - First Blood Part 2).

Usually, if I have the time, I will close the window blinds, turn off the lights, sit in the bean bag chair, put on the headphones, and listen to a new score that way.

After I have heard it for a while, I will have it playing while on the computer or doing other work.

my film music obsession REALLY took off when I started grad school. I had to have SOMETHING in the background whilst prepping for class, writing 30-page long research papers about nothing in particular, doing research for said papers, doing statistics, and all that sort of stuff.

Music really helps you absorb all that material.

of course, the TYPE music is, pardon the pun, instrumental. you can't do that with Ozzy or NWA.

Acctually I think I've tried that. You wouldn't belive how scores I've tried. I think The Mummy Returns works better than Goldmsith's though. You can really get cookin' when Ricks theme plays. I love it! It's so fun experimenting with diffrent scores.

I can listen to scores without doing anything, though I do find myself tapping my feet or something at brief intervals to emphasize a passage.

I know there's a topic about this, but that is the way I let off steam after work. I just let a score envelop me. Right now, KUNDUN does that for me.

I can do that for a few scores.

Conan the Barbarian, I can just sit there doing nothing but listening.

ALso, I'm odd in that loud music doesn't give me headaches but takes them away. When I get a bad headache, I throw the headphones on, throw the volume up to unholy levels, and drown out my headaches with music. Nothing but sit and listen to music until the damned thing is gone.

You listen to scores while at the movies, right? And the only other thing you're doing is watching the movie, right? So listen to the score without doing anything except pretending to watch a movie. Then gradually stop pretending that you're watching a movie. Eventually you'll find that you are listening to the score! Easy!

Another method would be to get that anti-Ritalin infomercial video from Chef and give those folks a call.

It's kind of hard for me to listen to scores anywhere else but my car. At work (I'm an editor at a posthouse) it is difficult for me to hear scores because I am constantly having to listen to the audio of whatever I am cutting. So when I have tried to play a score, I have to repeatedly pause the cd player which aggravates me because a score is like a symphony. You can't keep interrupting the flow of the music or it is worthless...at least to me. The tracks build on themselves, especially thematically. Thus, I tend now to listen to SONG cds because most songs last 3-5 minutes and seem to have an easier time picking up from an interruption...like at a new verse.

Sometimes, I have to play a score loudly at my apartment to drown out "Opera Man' next door or the new Gangsta Bass that just moved in downstairs. This evening's choice was a nice helping of THE MUMMY RETURNS. I'm usually very considerate about creating loud noise like this, and added to that, I am gone about 80% of the time, but lately I've gotten a little irritated. I am here so little I figure, why should I be so gracious?

Although, I am looking to get a nice walkman here soon. I've been looking at the SONY D-CJ01. Any opinions?

The car is a very effective place! I decked out mine with an 8 speaker system. Two tweeters, 4 mid range, and 2 10 inch subs so you can imagine how a score would sound in there. I find it the most enjoyable as a matter of fact. I'll try your idea Beatty.

Maybe you're hyper-active, Justin. I must admit that, even though I blurbed earlier about multiple listens sitting in the big chair, I'm finding it more and more difficult to do that. Maybe it's a sign of modern times, which is go go go. We've lost the knack of just being at peace. If the adrenalin gets too much for me nowadays, I get rid of it by jumping up and conducting into the mirror.

That's about all I do when listening to my CDs. Though, I'll usually prop myself up enough to sit and just take it all in! I have found it's not a wise idea to do so before bed...
