This is a wonderful album with some great compostions by Williams and a masterful performance by Yo Yo Ma. Williams keeps surprising me, coming up with the most striking works, and these are every bit as good as his both his Violin Concerto and his Flute Concerto. Although, strictly speaking, as far as "contemporary classical music" is concerned , he's about 50 years behind his contemporaries. But hey, noone's asking Williams to be the next Penderecki

Ma plays Williams better than Williams composes Williams.

Much of the music is a great exploration of the possibilities of the 'cello.
But somehow this album strikes me as a middle of the road hybrid: neither the crazy avant garde classical noise, nor the cute pop tunes Williams does for films.

So it kind of leaves me somewhat dry. I don't find it avant garde or original enough to keep me interested (read "busting my brain trying to figure it out") for a long time.
And it's not catchy and tuneful enough to be interesting for a long time either.

My favourite cue is the Elegy for 'cello and Orchestra (an expanded theme from Seven Years in Tibet). The rest I find somewhat average. Not bad, not good.

Sony's DSD recording is amazing. The Recording Arts Orchestra of LA lends a supporting role.

If you want to check out music by Williams that isn't "50 years behind his contemporaries" check out several of his cues from "Close Encounters..."

Sorry Gae, in "Close Encounters" he's about 20 years behind

Actually, I rewatched 2001 once again earlier this week, and suddenly noticed how similar parts of Williams' CE3K score are to the Ligeti pieces used by Kubrick.

No one ever said Williams was Mr Originality.

but what he does within all these different styles he uses is utterly amazing.

I didn't say it was unoriginal, nor did I criticize him for it. I think it's a fitting similarity, and a good inspiration.
