He made one of my all time favourite comedies "Some Like it Hot" as well as other classics. Its always sad when anyone passes on, the only consolation here being that he had a long and prosperous life. Someone mentioned on another post about deaths coming in threes...well heres proof..and they were all linked to comedy one way or another. R.I.P. Mr Wilder

95 years, I guess that's old "enough" - but it's still a shame. Reminded me of an interview with George Clooney on Austrian TV that was made shortly after our latest elections. Clooney said it's a shame that someone like Haider was now involved with the Austrian government (I agree), and in the very next sentence, he explained how much he admires German director Billy Wilder. Wilder was of course Austrian...

I was noticing the same thing. Truly a sad time for the world of laughter.

Damn, that sucks too! I saw him drumming for Ozzy way back on The Ultimate Sin tour. He went off on about a 10 minute drum solo, with a little 80s cheesiness thrown in by walking around the entire drum set and playing just about every part of the kit. At least I've got my memories...

No more Billy Wilder. And although he hadn't made a film for 20 years (or a really great film for about 30 years), he still went to his office everyday and was still heard in the news from time to time. In addition to a couple of recent bios on Wilder there was also an interview with Wilder conducted by Cameron Crowe, who wanted to sit at BW's feet for a while and learn a few tricks of the trade.

My friend SK provided me his top-10 Wilder list. He didn't say if they were ranked or not though I know his #1 title was his favorite Wilder film.

    Some Like It Hot
    Stalag 17
The Fortune Cookie (though unbalanced--Matthau's scam is just about to succeed when the 'hero' fowls it up)
    Ace in the Hole
    The Major and the Minor
    Double Indemnity
    5 Graves to Cairo
    Sunset Boulevard (good but overrated)
    One, Two, Three
    The Apartment (also overrated)

He said he was sorry he had no room for The Lost Weekend and Sabrina and gave mention to 4 films Wilder scripted but didn't direct: Midnight, Ninotchka, Ball of Fire, and the German silent Menschen am Sonntag. He also mentioned that Wilder wrote nearly all of his films as opposed to directors which rarely if ever do their own writing.

I myself would add also minor kudos to Mauvaise Graine, A Foreign Affair, Kiss Me Stupid, Avanti, and The Private Life of Sherlock Holmes, although none of these are great films, I didn't hate the time I spent watching them.

Wilder also needs to be honored for giving Miklos Rozsa 5 opportunities to write great scores: Double Indemnity, Lost Weekend, 5 Graves to Cairo, Private Life of Sherlock Holmes, and Fedora. Also for giving Franz Waxman his first Oscar on Sunset Boulevard as well as for the opportunity to score Stalag 17 and one of Waxman's triumphs The Spirit of St. Louis. Lastly, Wilder's long association with designer-filmmaker Charles Eames is another plus. Eames designed a house (unbuilt), a chaise lounge, and the montage sequence in Spirit of St. Louis for Wilder as well as went along with Wilder and his wife on Wilder's honeymoon! In Wilder's later years, he would still speak of Eames and his designs fondly.

As Joe Gillis's line in SUNSET BOULEVARD goes:

"Funny how gentle people are with you when you're dead."
