They could have played the love theme from Spartacus. It's not hard and is as recongizable as many of the other pieces played.

Ready to be shocked?I wouldn't have recognized the "Love Theme" from Spartacus.
I've seen the movie, heard the score, but as I said, Alex North is fairly hard to get into and I don't think it would have struck a chord with the filmgoing public.

Originally posted by cine-sin:I agree with some of the things you say. Not everyone is going to be pleased. My statement was said in haste and I should have reminded myself of two things:
1. This is the oscars
2. 3 minute sequence compared to other sequencesHowever, my suggestion has nothing to do with elitism or snobbery and I think you went on a different tangent there. All, I was trying to suggest was that (ideally) there could have been a larger range of composers showcased - which does not mean that overall mass appeal need be reduced.
Regards,
RochelleRochelle, my response was not specific to you but rather aimed at a larger audience. I have been noticing that a fair number of people lately who seem to believe that enjoying film music makes us somehow intrinsically better than those who don't.
I think what we need is to get more people into film music so that we have enough demographic to matter. Ideally, a week’s worth of biographies on A&E, as suggested previously would help. The perfect time was when the postage stamps came out, but too late for that. Or maybe some broadcasts of Film Music concerts highlight how themes of film music have made it into everyday life. How many times has the opening to Patton been used in a parody? Commercials use movie themes all the time and show that highlighted that use and showcased the original use of the music would be great.
