Every year at the Oscars, I hear several wonderful themes played repeatedly,
and I can’t identify them. One in particular stands out. It is a gorgeous, almost
heraldic melody usually used as a transition from a win to an advertisement. Tonight
it was played the longest after Sydney P. won his award,
left the stage and was standing with Denzel. It also was played as Halle Berry
left the stage. Sounds like it may be from a movie. I could hum it for you all, but
you may not hear it over Internet lines. Any idea what this major melody is and
    if it’s from a movie?

    NP My humming

Is it the elusive, oft-unheard Fanfare for Oscar by Goldsmith?

Goldsmith's Oscar® music was indeed used as a bumper a couple of times.

The flub that Julia Roberts® made about Bill vs Tom Conti didn't go un-noticed by my friends watching the show. They kinda-sorta missed Bill Conti's conducting and know who Tom Conti is.

I think that Randy Newman® was genuinely surprised to win an Oscar®.

Real cute, you guys. It wasn't any type of a fanfare, and certainly not Goldsmith's, but it is always played many times at each Oscar ceremony.

    Joan,
I know exactly the music you are talking about and I also would like to know what it is.

    Dean.

Incidentally, speaking of a "what was that?" vibe (sorry to be hijacking your thread here Joan, and to answer I have no idea what it was), but does anyone know what that jazzy music was when Dunst & Maguire came up to do their presenting thing?

Pete, if I recall correctly, they played the theme from the SPIDERMAN animated series - 'cos McGuire is of course in the new Spidy flick.

I figured it would probably have been some Spiderman thing, but I've not heard the theme from the animated series. I wondered if that was what it was, but I had no way of recognising it. Sorry.

John Williams conducting an orchestra version of Relax by Frankie goes to Hollywood (when Ben Stiller and Owen Wilson walked on) pretty much made my evening music wise...

That was probably Mark Watters conducting, who conducted the orchestra for most of the evening... Williams only conducted a few key parts.

Mmmm, I saw your little bit about that in another thread, Dan. Interesting... still, an orchestra version of Relax is still something I never thought I'd hear (and at the academy awards of all things!).

Joan, I only watched the last few mins last night and listened to the end credits. That had many famous AA winning film scores in it. I did not hear the one you are talking about.

The End credits had all these in it:

Around the World in 80 Days, ET, Mary Poppins, Love is a Many Splendored Thing, and several others I recognized.

I noticed Castaway was played when Hanks was on there.

    John.
