Julia Roberts is indeed pathetic, isn't she??But at least we were not forced to see the abominable Jim Carrey talking through his arse this year...

Julia Roberts obviously hasn't got a clue; not only did she insult Bill Conti last year, this year, the first thing to come out of her mouth was the ignorant mistake of calling Bill Conti, "Tom Conti"!!!The words Thick as **** come to mind!
Dean.

I thought for a moment that she was referring to obscure actor Tom Conti...can't think of what movies he was in, but go here www.imdb.com and look him up....I think he's a real person

Yeah Sean, Tom Conti is a British actor. Perhaps best known to American's for having a cameo in Friends when he played the father of Ross' British girlfriend (Jennifer Saunders of 'Absolutely Fabulous' fame played his wife in the same episodes).Dan

They also misspelled Ernst Gold's name "Ernest" Gold during the film music flashback (when they played Exodus).

Also worth pointing out, Tom Conti was a guest with Johnathan Ross for the British coverage of the Oscars!Dean.

Worst than the "Tom Conti" situation was to listen Julia "Pathetic" Roberts saying - with those horrible horse-tooth smile of hers, how thriled she was for having kissed Sidney Poitier, like if she was the biggest fighter for the anti-racist cause...How embarrassing...

I don't think that's how she intended it, Andre... it was more of an honor and delight for her to give Poiteir a kiss than anything.

Dan B, Dean, my sentiments exactly. The best music presentation really has had its share of flubs these past few years. Since it was flub-free this year, it's only fitting Roberts had to insult the music elsewhere. I look for it every year. No respect I tell ya!

I think it is very easy to condemn and call names.
Roberts appeared to be trying to make a genuine apology.[Message edited by mgh on 03-25-2002]

I liked Ross' coverage for the BBC, the highlight was early on when he had Alan Cumming on who joked about all the goodie bags the post ceremony parties were handing out and how he was probably going to stick it all on ebay.

I think Julia displayed true idiocy when it came to 'Tom Conti' but I don't her kiss of Poitier had anything to do with an anti-race cause. I just think she likes to roll off the tails of the big guns. For instance, last year (at Golden Globes) she giggled about having to appear on stage after the monolithic Bob Dylan.

I honestly think she was trying to be "politically correct" as much as she could.
But since Roberts is such an awful actress, wasn't able to convince anyone! As I said, quite embarrassing...

Hey Wedge, isn't Ernst Gold indeed Ernest Gold? Never seen him as Ernst on any credits. Or did I get you the wrong way round? Maybe I'm as dumb as Julia...(and stop insulting the dear sweet girl!)

True, Cine-sin. Anyone see how she was hanging all over Denzel Washington as he was coming off stage? Luckily he made it to Mel Gibson and she let him go.posted 03-25-2002 05:57 PM PT (US)

What a bitch-fest this is!
Y'all got yer cat claws out there...FFFT! FFFT! FFFT!I'm no Julia Roberts fan (she says I belong in the dictionary between "reptile" and "repugnant"), but...HEY! I KNOW who Tom (Shirley Valentine) Conti is, and Bill (The Right Stuff, Masters Of The Universe) is one of my very favorite composers!
I don't mind admitting that I have frequently mixed up the "Bill" with the "Tom", and had to correct myself...but when that happened, I wasn't featured on a LIVE TV telecast, for all the world to watch me screw up!Give the girl a break...if any of YOU had made a similar gaffe, you would like to be shown a little bit of kindness.

But that's probably because I'd just seen in on BBC. I thought it was a bit random, but hadn't realised she was meaning Bill until I came here the next day. Suddenly all made sense.Oh, & I agree with Kinsinger: lighten up, guys. Everyone makes mistakes.

Indeed, as I was saying, leave the dear sweet girl alone. My grannie thinks that a conductor is someone who takes your fare on the bus, and she always forgets John Williams' name, but I don't hate her for it.And Timmer, she wasn't Troy Tempest in Stingray, was she? I was sure she was Marina (Aquamarina, oh how my heart sings three turtle doves whenever you're neeeaaar).

You need to see a picture of them side by side Graham, the resemblance is uncanny...Just so you know the differance, one's made of wood and the other is Troy Tempest!

I agree Chris. I've never heard so much petty bitching about nothing in my life. Ms. Roberts happens to be a very good friend of Denzel's, and has been rooting for him to win the Oscar for months. Lighten up folks.....and get a life!!!

Yeah I didn't intend for this to become an all out RobertS bashing thread, I don't know where the who Denzel issue came from, that's certainly pushing it. I have little against her appart from her frequent Conti hicups.
