I was just wondering if any fellow Brits heard this on Simon Bates' Classic FM at the movies last Saturday? There was some great music being played, mainly in short suites. I managed to record most of the show and have been listening to the pieces all week. Great stuff. Does anyone know which albums the recordings are off? Here's a list of some of the music played:-

    Crescendo (Malcolm Williamson)
A lovely concerto-type piece for piano and orchestra, illustrating the "Concert Pianist" theme of the film. The movie always seems to generate a lot of criticism in reviews but the few times I've caught it on late night TV, I've always enjoyed it.

Frankenstein Created Woman (James Bernard) Lovely haunting version of the Main theme.

Kiss of the Vampire (James Bernard) Wow!! Another great concerto-type piece for piano and orchestra. There are elements of the typical Bernard sound in the harmonies but the writing for piano is refreshingly different and makes this suite sound like an avant garde piano fantasy...great stuff!!

When Dinosaurs Ruled the Earth (Nascimbene) Nice version of the theme which was instantly recognisable by me having seen the film a few times. The middle section goes into a more driving, action-based music, before the main theme returns with a satisfying coda-type ending.

Curse of the Werewolf (Benjamin Frankel)
I missed the beginning of this piece but what I got is some terrific dissonant driving music..probably for the Death Of the Werewolf at the end of the movie.

    She (James Bernard)
Bernard's lovely haunting theme used in the film similar to that used on earlier albums which I have.

Dr. Jekyll and Sister Hyde (David Whitaker)
This is an enjoyable Waltz piece which is a different melody to that of the "Main Theme". Dont know what part of the film it was used in. It doesn't actually seem to fit anywhere in the film.

Wow, great stuff on that programme, Gae! You say that most of these were suites, and therefore not from the GDI "Main Titles" compilations? Nevertheless, the CRESCENDO piece sounds like it could be on the second volume. That's four and a half minutes long. Maybe some of the other bits are on the Silva re-recorded discs. KISS OF THE VAMPIRE for example opens their Film Music Of James Bernard, and is a longish concerto.

Great great great music for Hammer!

It was great music Graham. Simon Bates relly surprises me as apparently he's a big film music fan and he really knew his Hammer Music. Just a shame he wasted so many years doing the "Radio One" roadshow . The "Crescendo" recording is indeed 4':30" lond so it must be the version you mentioned. The sound quality is a bit old and mono-ish recording but its still a great piece. Here are the lengths of the other pieces which might help you to pinpoint them.

    Frankenstein Created Woman 6:50

Dr. Jekyll and Sister Hyde 1:43

    Kiss of the Vampire 6:54

    She 4:15

When Dinosaurs Ruled the Earth 4:45

I forgot..there was another lovely piece from James Bernard. It was from one of the Dracula films, I think "Scars of Dracula" and was a gentle "Love theme" with strings and a pizzicato bass...length 5:18 plus another short piece I'd forgotten about from "The Witches" by Richard Rodney Bennett...a quiet percussive rhythm with vibraphone, drums and a mysterious melody on the flute 1:10

Bates, of course, did make Nino Rota's Romeo And Juliet theme famous!

"The Best of Hammer Horror" is only £6:95.....Looks like I'm gonna be spending some money soon!!

Right Gae, going on those timings you give, FRANKENSTEIN CREATED WOMAN, KISS OF THE VAMPIRE, and SCARS OF DRACULA tie in with the timings on Silva's "The Devil Rides Out: The Film Music Of James Bernard".

GDI's second compilation of themes has THE WITCHES, 1.11 long. And their first compilation has DOC JEK AND SIS HYDE, 1.42 long. Have you got both of these GDIs? Oh, it looks like SHE's from Number 1 as well.

I don't know what the sources are for the other things you mention: I do know that Silva's HORROR re-recording had a suite from CURSE OF THE WEREWOLF on it.

Gae (and everybody): do not miss GDI's full recording of Franz Reizenstein's THE MUMMY! Bloody brill!

I think it's funny how everyone that has responded to this thread (until now) is from Europe/UK.

Thanks Graham, Apart from "The Witches" and "Crescendo", I pretty much know from which albums the music comes from now. Most are from the album "Hammer the studio that dripped blood" which contains the following:-

THE SCARS OF DRACULA Love Theme
    FRANKENSTEIN CREATED WOMAN - Christina
KISS OF THE VAMPIRE - Vampire Rhapsody
WHEN DINOSAURS RULED THE EARTH (Mario Nascimbene) Main Theme/Storm Over the Sea
SHE Suite (James Bernard) Ayesha – She Who Must Be Obeyed
CURSE OF THE WEREWOLF (Benjamin Frankel) Pastorale/The Werewolf at Bay/Apotheosis
Click here to see the albumHammer the studio that dripped blood Its priced at £11:99 at Amazon.co.uk.

Graham, also, have a listen to these samples from "The Best of Hammer Horror". Its a bargain at the U.K. store for £6:95 but there are no audio clips there
    The Best of Hammer Horror

As soon as I get some spare cash, these two will be on my list!!

From what I can fathom, the cuts on The Best Of Hammer seem to be exclusively from already released GDI things. Hammer: The Studio That Dripped Blood looks culled from a number of sources - GDI and Silva (I think that most of the Dracula suites are from the Neil Richardson-conducted Silva release.)

Siva's are all re-recordings, whilst GDI's are all original. If I can make a suggestion to potential buyers, go for the GDIs. The sound isn't as consistently good as Silva's, but Silva horses around with unnecessary embellishments, and doesn't quite capture the Hammer spirit, in my humble opinion.

    Hail to the Hammerheads!
