I would really love to get the Varese release, but you know how finances go. Anyway, for those who have it, and the 2 cd boot, is there anything on the Varese release that is NOT on the 2 cd boot?

It seems that most everything that is on the Varese (not counting the lame, LAME "Let It Snow") is on the boot. The sound is amazingly similar, too.

    Well, how 'bout this....

what's on the 2cd boot that is NOT on the Varese?
Ditto the Pony Tail boot(aside from that lame Roy Rodgers cue....I heard this on Streaming Soundtracks, and its like a MIDI keyboard cue someone did in the basement of Dave Beethoven's 9th with a slow Western rhythm).

I can only compare the Pony Tail boot and the Varese release, and gotta say that I swear the boot has fuller sound..... I'm happy with the extra music and stuff on the Varese (sorry, don't have the 2-CD to compare!), but it almost sounds like it's being played in a tin-can.... eeesshhh....
(or as Sean would say, Huzzah!)

O.K. Well, at least I don't feel as bad for not having it. I find the quality of the boot to be pretty good. Better than the Pony. I'm very happy with it, so I guess I'll just stick with it.

    Thanks for the responses.

The cheapo version of "Let It Snow" is heard in the film when we first see Powell, buying twinkies "for his wife" at the 7-11.

That's too bad about the Varese sound quality, but I still plan to get it someday, if just to support them...I don't like having the boot and not the original, which may be a pretentious thing to say, but for what it's worth I support our legit labels.

The sound on the 2cd isn't bad, sounds like it was sourced from tapes.
It's a murky sounding score to begin with, and I was really surprised at how much Kurzweil shows up in the recordings, which isn't as audible in the film. In fact there are lots of cues that seem to substute synths in the pizz. string and select wind parts, which cheapens the sound a bit. Was this a budgetary decision? Anyone know what the budget on Die Hard was?

    Blah blah,
    Sean

I noticed the same thing, there were more ambient synth tracks on the varese release that i remember hearing in the movie. The pizz is definately synth and some of the strings are synth, I also am very curious, was there a limited budget?

There goes that subjective issue of sound quality again. The Pony boot certainly has more hiss than the Varese edition which is probably why it sounds brighter. That may be why people think it sounds better even though it's not supposed to have the hiss which gets masked in louder passages. Kinda like the "LPs still sound better" argument even though they have inferior sound REPRODUCTION quality to digital playback. People just know what they like to hear, whether or not these added "anomolies" were intended to be there.

I have the 2CD boot which, when I got it, had noticeably worse sound quality than the Pony version. So I went thru and replaced all tracks with the Pony versions and also eliminated the Horner and Scott cues and still ended up with about 83 minutes of Kamen's music which means that something extra is on the 2CD edition. Now as to WHICH ones are missing from the Varese edition, I'm not sure since I haven't had the time to do the comparison.
