It's probably retailers breaking the street dates.Distributors have to get the product in advance of the actual street date so that every store has it available at the same time. Their customers agree to hold the product from sale until the street date.
Depending on the method of distribution, some stores always get it before the street date. They are supposed to hold it for sale until the street date, but there are always some who refuse to wait.
If Varese wanted to take action, something they would do only if a competing retailer squawked, they could force the distributors to hold that customer’s shipment until the street date. Then they wouldn’t have it until after everybody else did.
With soundtracks, nobody likely cares. But what if you had the new N’Sync album before anybody else? Breaking the street date on a hot property can cause quite a stink.

I dunno, but I'm never able to go into a store on the "street date" and find what I want. King of Kings would be a good example of this happening recently. But since nobody gives a crap about film scores, this doesn't surprise me much at all.[Message edited by jonathan_little on 03-20-2002]
