    Hi,

has there ever been a score release? I don´t remember much of it, but I guess I would like to see a release anyway.

    Thanks for your time.

    Philipp

It was issued on vinyl, cass., and CD. There was an Andy Summers track, the theme from 2010 with the Strauss thing on electric guitar etc. The Shire score was represented by a lot of midling electronic suspense cues and some terrific full orchestra work for the finale.

I always felt that this was a missed opportunity for Shire, the score is merely okay'ish though I do love the orchestral 'New Worlds' theme, the rest of it seems to just ramble on in a synth droning sort of way! Bought the LP when it was released and was dissapointed considering that I had high expectations from this great composer who works so little in films these days!?

...I guess he just lives it up on those 'Saturday Night Fever' royalties?!

I agree, the synth work in this score is rather dull, but I love the "New Worlds" theme so much, it's worth buying the CD!

Yet it's his Synth work which enhances the Movie's Atmosphere greatly. Specially in the Space Scenes. Which is why I like the whole CD.

Shire himself was very disappointed with how he had to record the score. He stated that 90% of it ended up being synth due to budget constraints. The only thing they filmmakers would spring for was the orchestral finale.

brutus, I agree that the synths work well in the film...but I find them rather dull as a stand-alone listening experience.

I do see your point, Chris. To be more specific, I like this score (including the synth-parts) more because of the nostalgic feelings it brings up in me: the movie made great impact on me when I saw it (I was sixteen at the time and not yet too often in the cinema...). The more "sientific" approach of the movie (compared with Star Wars) was captured perfectly with those synth-sounds. I thought that Space would rather "sound" like that than Williams' orchestral "tapestry"...

I have the score on Vinyl. If it weren't for the granduer of the first film with it's expansive classical track the synth portions of 2010 would be ok. 2001 treated space as vast, mysterious and majestic whereas Peter Hyams' treament was cold and claustrophobic... basically more scientifically accurate, but far less wonderful.

I understand the intellectual intent of doing the earlier parts on the score electronically. There was a brooding, synthetic, impersonal thing going on in the story until the "Something Wonderful" happens at the end. Intellectually it made sense but dramatically it cooled off a movie that, to me, was even colder than the first one.

Maurice Jarre took a similar approach with Enemy Mine. The first half of the score is all electronic binkering but when the relationship between the kid alien and Dennis Quaid takes off the score turns gloriously orchestral. One of my favorite MJ scores.
