I took my girlfriend to see Ice Age last night, and we were both suprised how much we enjoyed it! I enjoyed it more than Shrek, although it wasn't nearly as good as Monsters Inc. Some thoughts on the film :

    1) Ice Age looked like a cartoon! Shrek tried too hard to have photorealistic backgrounds, and there was nothing in Final Fantasy that could not have been done in live action. It was very nice to see a cartoon that LOOKS like a cartoon! Beautiful, stylized backgrounds that resembled the painted backgrounds on the cartoons of the 40's and 50's! The art direction was very well done. (monsters inc as well has a nice look to it. )

    2) THE SCORE. David Newman's animation scores all seem to sound very smiliar. I was thinking how much Ice AGe sounded like Anastaisa, when a beautiful waltz began in the film. During the cave scenes, Newman created a piece of music that plays for a few minutes with a nice soundmix...very well done. Some nice aggressive action music with drums in big fight scene as well. There was only one short song, which I can't place, but it worked well. A nice end credits suite ended the film. I am looking forward to getting a copy of the promo.

    3) nice animation! The fur was not as well done as in monsters inc, but I liked the character designs. The humans looked great, almost claymation-ish. I am curious to see the entire character that they cut out (sid's GF) on the dvd.

    4) The star wars trailer. wooo! The "Spirit" (horse movie) trailer was decent as well.

Overall, I recommend the movie, and score (if you can find it)!

If it's the same trailer I saw the other day, there was more animation in the Star Wars thing, than there could ever be in Ice Age. AOTC looks like a cartoon.

I too really enjoyed Ice Age...and the short song that you couldn't place was Rusted Root's "send me on my way" which I think worked very well in the movie.

And we don't want that! I was praying to God that Lucas would shoot Episode 2 without any bluescreens at all, on location in Germany, and in black and white... I wanted Ep. 2 to give us a poetic look at humanity and man's ability to offer unconditional love to those around him- not a bunch of CG characters, settings, and battles. BLECH!

Ice Age...fun all around. And I agree with Boba...the mesh of sharp characters with cartoonish backgrounds was a pleasant change.

As for the Clones trailer...seeing it the theatre was a treat--what I initially thought to be some blandness to the FX was replaced with crisp (yes, colorful images) Call it a cartoon if you want...but real sets simply wouldn't allow the imagery that Lucas is going for. Enough on that.

Go see Ice Age..I will have to go again...the film when out with a few minutes to go. Argg....

Uh oh! Just sent a long rambling email about 40mins. ago(?), and I think that was the address I used......maybe email takes longer to cross the ocean, than locally

PS...yep, just checked, thats the address I sent it to!

Sorry for all this personal biz here guys...um, if you haven't heard David Newman's FIREBIRDS, get it. It's kick ass, an action conglomeration of T.Newman synths,Poledourian muscle, and D. Newman's melodic sensibilities, for what is a wretched film I'm told

Just plain loved it. I’ve been dying to see a fun comedy, and I left
this movie with sore ribs from laughing so much. Yes, it does have
a maudlin tear-jerking ending, but this manipulation is more than compensated for
by a smart, comedic script. While the children in the movie reacted to the
visuals, the adults roared at the savvy dialogue that quite often was geared
towards adults. Superbly scored by David Newman. John Leguizamo’s voice
as the sloth is amazing. How did he get such a sloshy, saliva laden voice?
See this with the intent of having fun and give the squirrel an Oscar.

Varese will most likely trim the fat from the score to put out their CD. I'm sure it will be great.

Just as an unusual aside, this is my 1000th post.

Just saw "Ice Age" today. I don't care if it's only April; this is one of the funniest movies of the year. It's a neck-and-neck tie as to who was funnier: Sid (voiced by John Leguizamo in perhaps the performance of his career) or Scrat.

David Newman's score is among his all-time best. The orchestrations are particularly noteworthy. I look forward to the Varese CD.

I might have not seen it all correctly, but it looks like a 30-minute CD.

Not really, when you consider that "the boot" was really just a composer promo that Newman put out - and therefore it stands to reason that the tracks are titled the same, since he probably named them himself.

yeah, most of these tracktitles are exactly the same as on the boot....but if it was a promo by Newman himself why was it recorded THAT loud (it almost sounds "scratching" in loud passages) and why does the 2nd track "Here´s Manny" contain faint dialogue...?
