It's amazing what a little music can do.Years ago, when I first really started noticing movie music, and the fact that such scores evoked the emotions and power of the films they represented (forsaking for the moment my early ignorance of inferior scores and patterning) ... I was at Universal Studios Hollywood, where, during the tram ride, we reached Hill Valley Courthouse Square, and the thrilling theme from Back to the Future was played over the speakers. I realised then that there was more to a film than a high ticket price and a rented video... there was a piece I could own and cherish forever.
As years went by, and the popularity of the Internet grew, I found that I wasn't alone in my love and passion for movie music, that as my CD and tape (oh, yes! tapes) collection grew, so, too, did my understanding of fine film music...and the people I would meet who loved it as much as I did.
I started out at Movie Score, and then FilmTracks, but then, when PeterK opened up this fine place, it seemed to me that I'd found a home. And though it took me a few months or more to reach that high post title that accompanies our names, I haven't really felt a part of this site. I have gotten to know people like SEBULBA, and have been included in private, non-MovieMusic emails from Kimiakane. I've posted in heated debates over scores, their worth, and what the compsers are doing now. (Some would probably say... de-composing, like many anti-Horner fans would agree...I'm not one of them).
And now...I've lately seen two posts which have totally transcended my expectations of this message board. Two people have opened their hearts, and confessed deeply personal concerns, some pertaining to untimely deaths, some to dreaded illness and disease.
The Movie Music community has responded with great support and care!! I'm so proud that for a moment or two, we can overcome our differences of opinion, and in the face of tragedy (like we need to be reminded of our mortality when 9/11 still looms over us in the shadow of what had been, and what is NOW) ... we can come together, as humans, sharing this same space, and face our fears and doubts with decency, kindness, and love.
Thank you all for rebuilding my hopes in a world of near strangers.
