Spielberg should return to the pure fantasy/fiction movies.
He simply isn't mature or bold enough to deal with the real world and with real people.

The only good "mature" movie he did was SCHINDLER'S LIST - even with the manipulative conclusion.

I have listened to it again, and again, and again.
I revisit this score about once a month in the hope that I will hear what makes this score so lauded, but I just don't get it.
Except for the melody that is the basis for the song, this score is an unfortunate miscalculation for Williams and Spielberg (of course, these days, Speilberg has to go a long way to impress me).
However, I must say that I disliked the movie so much that the score would have to be pretty brilliant for me to like it.
I mean, I didn't like ET or Schindler's List but the scores are incredible achievements for Williams. It is rare that I like both the Spielberg movie and the Williams score equally (the last time was Amistad - great film, great score) and AI was definitely not one of those times (average score, bad film).

Whoa whoa whoa, let me get this straight Mattstar, you didn't like Schindler's List? Probably the best movie of the 90s (or Saving Private Ryan), and you didn't like it? Please explain why.

    Nightwing,
I didn't like Schindler's List because I never got the opportunity to learn anything about the people that were on the list. How many on the list did we even learn names for? Maybe half a dozen? Stern, Helen, that Moses guy that played the flute?
Mainly, I didn't like the direction of the film, because I don't like Spielberg as a director.
By the way, Saving Private Ryan was complete garbage. If Spielberg would have stopped after the first 20 minutes he might have had a pretty good movie.
And for my money, Shakespeare in Love was by far the best movie of the 90s.
All that said, the scores for Schindler's List and Saving Private Ryan (what there was of it) were good (But Williams should have won the Academy Award for Jurassic Park instead of Schindler's List).
    Now, discuss amongst yourselves.

Yep, that's right. I didn't like Schindler's List. I haven't liked most of Spielberg's work in the 90s (except for Amistad, which most people don't really care for and Jurassic Park isn't too bad).
I didn't like Schindler's List because I felt a great hole in the movie was the fact that the audience really didn't get to know the folks that were on the list. We might have got the names of maybe half a dozen people from the list. Stern, Helen, that Moses guy who played the flute. A few more. Plus, Spielberg as a director has never really thrilled me. I didn't like the way he used the black and white format and I found Liam Neeson to be rather stoic and uninteresting.
And don't get me started on Saving Private Ryan. One of the most overated and overbloated movies of the decade.
But the scores to those movies are good (even though Williams should have won the Academy Award for Jurassic Park instead of Schindler's List).

You know, I wasn't too crazy about AI at first. In fact, until recently, my opinion was that it didn't deserve an Oscar. But now my loyalities are split between LOTR and AI... I've had the 2-disc promo for quite some time, and while I've listened to it, I guess I haven't really listened to it. After a thorough listen, especially through the 2nd disc, I'm convinced. John Williams deserves it... but grrr, so does Howard Shore. My leanings toward LOTR are strong only because it's such a great score. Those who aren't impressed or think otherwise would change their opinion if they heard the entire thing as we are able to do with AI. Hopefully we'll get a nice 2-3 cd set at some point. I guess we have no choice but to wait and see what happens. Should be exciting.

You see Jeron, i don't understand why many people don't like the AI score. Just because it hasn't got that trademark AWESOME theme by Williams that doesn't mean that it's less great.I believe that the themes in AI are very very effective and are definetely amongst my favorite in Williams's carier.
    ....oh well...
