I can't think of any other major composer who can light film music enthusiast's fuses, so quickly as Maurice Jarre! Unplayable! Totally innapropriate! Off-centre, but to me. Never boring, always challenging, and still able to write scores that are unashamedly romantic. Two such recent purchases are quite simply superb! SUNSHINE and I DREAMED OF AFRICA. Of the very few select composers whose work I always buy, simply because they are who they are. He is one of that number. Does anyone else buy a composer's work for the same reason?

I don't really have any composer that I always buy every release from but I would add that Maurice Jarre is a composer that I do enjoy and always consider buying a release.

I have to say however that in general, I do not care as much for his synth scores as his orchestral ones.

    My Favorites of his:

    Lawrence of Arabia
    The Damned
    Walk in the Clouds
    5 Card Stud
    Grand Prix
    Moon over Parador

Other composers that I always consider buying:

    John Williams
    Jerry Goldsmith
    Danny Elfman
    Patrick Doyle
    Carter Burwell
    Elliot Goldenthal
    Max Steiner
    Miklos Rozsa
    Dimitri Tiomkin
    Franz Waxman
    Bernard Herrmann
    ALfred Newman

speaking of Jare, has anyone seen/ heard this new 2CD compilation that's out called The Emotion and the Strength?

is it a re-recording of the cues, or just a compilation of OSTs?

Apparently it's a collection of live concert recordings.

Emotion & Strength is a 2cd rehash of prev.available tracks that people who will defend Jarre to the death, such as myself, already have, but a very nice intro for people unfamiliar with his work. The only prev. unreleased cue is a 70 second fanfare for a theater in France.

Personally, I think Jarre is one of the best, can't get enough of his work. His melodies are so airy and catchy, how can you go wrong?

    Best,
    Sean

I can't say enough good things about Jarre. He's not the only one I'll buy everything by, but he is one of them. Oddly, I don't always like everything by him. I thought I Dreamed of Africa was astounding. But the theme in the score of Sunshine just reminded me too much of Frere Jacques or some other French nursery rhyme that it threw me off.

    The great Jarres:

    Eyes Without A Face
    Lawrence of Arabia
    The Professionals
    Grand Prix
    Doctor Zhivago
    Topaz
    A Passage to India
    The Collector
    Is Paris Burning?
    Night of the Generals
    Ryan's Daughter
    Witness
    Mad Max Beyond Thunderdome
    Red Sun
    Crossed Swords
    The Year of Living Dangerously
    Tai-Pan
    Gorillas in the Mist
    Almost an Angel
    Sunchaser
    Shadow of the Wolf
    Enemy Mine
    I Dreamed of Africa

Excellent choices, Lou! How I love the march from Night Of The Generals...
And the main title from The Professionals! He propels that film like a rocket with his score.

I'm not a Jarre enthusiast but have enjoyed scores from different times in his career.

    Sunshine
    Dead Poet's Society
    Gorilla's in the Mist
    The Professionals
