Currently playing RAISING CAIN, and having watched bits of BLOW OUT on TV the other night, I realised that Donaggio hasn't done much scoring of American/Hollywood movies recently, but it looks like he's done a slew of them in Europe, none of which have made it to the UK. Which of his Euro-scores are worth picking up, along the styles of his work for De Palma (DRESSED TO KILL will always be one of my favourite scores of all time)?

    NP: RAISING CAIN (Pino Donaggio)

    NOW your talking!

Here's my list o' Pino, minus the couple you mentioned which we know are good

The Barbarians-fun pop/orch. melodies, punchy spacious recording.

    Meridian-nice synth/orchestra score, good themes.

    Zelly and Me-gorgeous pastoral,chamber pseudo-classical score

DePalma/Donaggio-Milan Expanded CD-essential re-recording, containing extra tracks not on the weak US issue, find the Milan France one.

Carrie-more great themes, Ryko album a must, now OOP.

Deja Vu/Going Bananas/Ordeal by Innocence-a favorite of mine, Deja is a gorgeous suspense/romance score, close cousin to DtoKill, Bananas is a fun romantic action-y score, Ordeal 17mins. of somber drama/suspense.

Dove Siete?Io Sono Qui-a bit dull, string and synth score, no love themes, but nice to have anyway. Fun pop synth cues break things up.

Qualcuno in Ascolto- good adventure/romance score with larger orchestra than usual for Pino.

Morte in Vaticano- suspenseful strings, guitar led love theme, and the wildest mix of Gregorian chant/pop in a theme you are ever likely to hear.

Dont Look Now-essential, his first score, gorgeous themes for piano, strings, short suspense cues. HIGHLY recommended.

Never Talk to Strangers-2 all too brief cues on song album, almost makes it worth it...pick up for a dime if you can

Colpo Di Coda-fun action score, more good themes, heavier synths than usual.

Tchin-Tchin-if you like his pop work, there are some decent themes here, more synth/source than other albums.

Un Eroe Borghese-lovely understated romantic themes with ugliest covers you'll ever see. Brief suspense bits, more nostalgic than anything.

Musica per il Cinema-highly rec. compilation with some hard to find tracks, good overview, rich in themes.

The Fan-cdr boot - needs a real release, great score.

Body Double-cdr boot - ditto above,my all time fave Pino. Incredible themes, cohesive score.

Up At The Villa-gorgeous return to form, after moving towards more synth scoring in the past few years, HIGHLY rec.

The Howling-LP - if you can find it, essential.

Tourist Trap-LP - ditto above, great themes, suspense, action.

Home Movies-LP - fun take on Rossini with 70's love themes that are close to my heart Some ghastly asides to disco though.

Piranha-LP - most varied score of Pino's with lots of action, strong themes, memorable suspense. This score and the above were featured, albeit truncated, on the Varese Symphonic Suites disc. Get the original lps or copies if you can.

Crawlspace-LP - really needs a cd release, great themes, heavy synth and orchestra. Highly listenable.

Hercules- Varese LP, LP-CDR Transfer - wonderful thematic take on Korngold, lots of strong brass work here. This sounds redundant but Pino has always, to my ears, written strong themes, and his scores such as this from the early 80's, show this off reallly well.

Oltre La Porta-LP - moody romance, short album, 'Their Music' grand romantic highlight. Recommended, but awfully short(25mins.)

Nero Veneziano-Cass - really nice score, alternates suspense/romance in each cue. If you like the theme, you'll love it...if not,well....

The Berlin Affair-Cass - moody drama, with some fun period source cues, great love music.

Blow Out-complete cdr boot,LP/cass boot dub - the cdr boot is awful, and my copy is scratched The lp is a bizarro re-recording bootleg(is that a first?) One of his most exciting, varied scores REALLY needs a decent issue. Holds up to his other DePalma scores very well.

Due Occhi Diabolichi-Cass - great horror music, hard to find LP

Dancers-Cass - all synth/pop, with funny Italian pop songs, but all is fixed with a gorgeous symphonic arr. of these themes in final cue.

Appointment with Death-Cass - oddball, pop/action take on Agatha Christie. I love it personally....its on a oop Silva CD.

The Gamble-Cass - really fun,htf action/romance score, uses the same churning synth rhythms from Crawlspace. Recommended.

Trauma-Cass - sometimes goofy, but not unrewarding Argento score, nice underused love music, more of that great string laden suspense we love

I Misteri Della Giungla Nera-Cass - fun action score, htf, but worth it. A little long, but it's nice to hear the composer break out of the suspense mold into action territory sometimes.

Symphonic Suites-Varese Club cdr - as above, this was a missed oppurtunity.

La Setta-cass - interesting synth score, almost like source cues. Only 5 cues or so by Donaggio.

Ok, my right hand just fell off, hope this brings a few new things to light. If any pique your interest, let me know and I'll expand a bit more on them!

    Best,
    Sean

I was trying to remember the name of this stinky little picture with Klaus Kinski... Was this the one with Oliver Reed and the snake? Great score, for sure.

I also totally agree with you on Hercules. A great symphonic score for a totally silly film... Varese should put this out on CD.

How is the sound on The Fan?

Last year, a Pino score was released for Tra Due Mondi, an Italian period piece. A nice symphonic score...

VENOM, with a score by Michael Kamen is what your thinking of I believe...the Kinski pic is a pretty twisted flick from the waning days of Empire Pictures, and I haven't seen it for years. Fun score though, lots of variety and good themes.

I also totally agree with you on Hercules. A great symphonic score for a totally silly film... Varese should put this out on CD.

Intrada announced a cd of this back in '93 but it didn't happen....guess they did THE BARBARIANS instead. That is a good album, but kind of falls apart towards the end.

How is the sound on The Fan?

The Fan....well, it's mostly clean mono, seems to be complete about 45mins. 21 cues, some distortion on a couple cues, sound efx on one other.

Last year, a Pino score was released for Tra Due Mondi, an Italian period piece. A nice symphonic score...

Haven't heard that or his other recent work, though I might be getting some soon. He has moved more towards synths than I care for in his work lately, although UP AT THE VILLA is really gorgeous, and a nice return to form.

    Ciao!

    Aren't all his scores less-than-famous?
