Are you referring to the music? (John Powell & Harry Gregson-Williams vs. David Newman)

    Or the film itself?

I think they're two different animals entirely (no pun intended) and until I see the film, any judgment on my part would be complete conjecture.

Well I'm more into the Film than the music in this particular case, the previews for ICE Age are as good as the Shrek Movie.

Well, in the interest of keeping this on the topic of film music (otherwise, take it to the Just Movies! forum...), does anyone have any thoughts on David Newman being picked to score the film?

I'm eager to hear what he came up with!

I think NEWMAN Awards achieved true international recognition.

1997 Academy Awards - Nominee, Best Original Musical/Comedy Score - Anastasia
1997 Academy Awards - Nominee, Best Original Song - "Journey to the Past" from Anastasia

1997 Golden Globes - Nominee, Best Original Song - "Journey to the Past" from Anastasia
1997 Golden Globes - Nominee, Best Original Song - "Once Upon A December" from Anastasia

But he didn't write any of the songs......did he?

Monsters Inc was TOTALLY better than anything "Regular Disney," DreamWorks, and ESPECIALLY Fox could ever do.

It's still hilarious to me that Fox thinks their animation division can thrive with the crap they're making.

Shaun, you are correct; Newman didn't write any of the songs in ANASTASIA.

eqmusic - what on earth does GALAXY QUEST have to do with what Shaun wrote? (Love the score, though!)

That makes little sense; Newman wrote the score to ANASTASIA, and did a mighty fine job with it. He also wrote the scores to GALAXY QUEST and a whole slew of films..... i'm not sure what you're getting at.....

Personally, this film looks like it's going to be great fun, but who knows...

The trailer with that little bugger trying to save his nut is hilarious and wicked cool looking, but the film also looks like it could be pretty formulaic. Here's hoping.

On the count of Shrek, I thought it was grossly overrated. Somewhat fun, I suppose, but how the hell do you make a whole film mocking the Disney formula then end it on such a cliche note? Anyway, I didn't even find it that funny, just great animation and pretty amusing.

And I've said it before and I'll say it again: Monster's, Inc is a friggin blast of a movie, filled with stunning animation, HILARIOUS dialogue (can't get enough of Crystal's character) and a heart. I doubt Ice Age will match the brilliance of that one.

Yeah John - that's great and all, but has anyone HEARD the score?? I mean, it's baseless speculation. Change ICE AGE to 102 DALMATIONS for a sec, and you'll see what I'm getting at.

To speculate about a potential nomination that wouldn't come for almost a year is really, well, silly.

    Hasta,

I concur, Shrek was extremely overrated. I can take about 5-10 minutes of Mike Myers and a Scottish accent, then it just gets annonying. Some of it was funny, but DEFINITELY NOT the best animated pic of the year!

Saw the preview of Ice Age, and it was pretty funny after it found its feet about 20 minutes in.

To go off the film score subject for a while, I thought the characters were very well done and the animation was superb. Though the plot seemed to borrow from Monsters Inc., Tarzan and The Lion King. But it's not that obvious once you get into the film.

As for the score, it sounded to me like it was originally written as if the film were a musical. It had themes that could have been sung (in my opinion, there were about three good song moments in the film).

I enjoyed the film, though it won't have the power or popularity of Shrek or any other film. I give Fox praise for getting back in the game after Titan AE (yuck).

"Scooby Doo and David Newman"?! Frogs sporting top hats and canes will fall from the sky and dance "The Michigan Rag" before David Newman even dreams of approaching that festering cow-pie. BTW, this was reported at the IMDB, who, as we all know, is notorious for getting it's facts wrong (Anyone else remember "Good Omens"; "Original music by Anne Dudley and Richard Band"?) Dude, quick lesson; there are some things you never, ever joke about. Also, many of your posts reek of spam, and as it is well known:

[high, feminine voice with a Cockney accent]

    WE DON'T LIKE SPAM!!!

Now, don't get me wrong, I love David Newman, but you need to phrase your posts more clearly.

Closing thought: has anyone else heard about Newman reuniting with Stephen Herek ("Critters", "Bill & Ted's Excellent Adventure") on the Angelina Jolie flick "Life or Something Like It"? Reunited, and it feels so...long overdue.

Well, using that logic, ANY film score is a "potential nominee"!!

As for SCOOBY DOO, well, so far he's supposed to be doing it.... (got that from the man himself, not IMDb)

    In this order:

"Ice Age" looks funny, even if some people - let's call them buttheads - are calling this a rip-off of "Monsters, Inc.". I can't wait to hear what Newman has done.

Hasn't anyone else heard about Newman doing "Life or Something Like it"? Reunion with Stephen Herek?

So it's true: Newman is scoring "Scooby-Doo". Y'know that scene in "Deep Blue Sea" where Samuel L. Jackson is giving the speech and then the shark just jumps out and turns him into lunch and Michael Rappaport practically collapses? Well, that's how I'm feeling on the inside. Sure, I'll get the score album if and when it comes out, but, even if I was threatened with death, I'm still not seeing the movie. I'd just like to say this one thing:

    Goddamn you, Raja Gosnell!!

Now, if you'll excuse me, I am going to bury my head into my pillow and cry myself to sleep.

Just got back from seeing ICE AGE. Fun movie, a lot of laughs, and highly entertaining - but not on the same level as SHREK or MONSTERS, INC.

Newman's score was definitely a fun one, and after the first 10-15 minutes (which didn't feel very cohesive) it started to find it's feet. A score release would be nice, but it's not gonna kill me if it doesn't happen.
