So this wonderful piece has been left off all 3 of the Moulin Rouge CDs.....I know it's not exactly anything new, but I personally liked it a lot, and would love to have it on CD.Could there be problems with Rodgers & Hammerstein?
And with all the DVD bootlegs floating around audiogalaxy, how come nobody managed to make a decent DVD rip? I would have thought that since the scene is only music, there would be a great rip. But the few I came across so far are very low quality.

I'm planning to rip what songs/cues I can from the DVD and combine them with the majority of stuff off the 2 released CDs and Armstrong's promo (the later of which I need to get a hold of at some point). Anything with sound effects however I will drop, which sadly leaves out a good portion, but that opening overture is definately do-able.They really messed up in producing the soundtracks, even these "film versions" on CD2 are not exactly so. Dare they milk us for a 3rd CD?

Yeah, what the hell is up with these "film versions" that aren't the true film version? Do they think we're deaf or stupid... or both?

Perhaps these "film versions" were Craig Armstrong's original cut, before they were laid to the film and edited for time or visual content (like George did for Ep. I)?I'm disappointed in what they didn't include:
Zidler's Rap (Medley) [Lady Marmalade, Smells Like Teen Spirit, Because We Can]
The Sound of Music
The Green Fairy
Fool to Believe
The Entire Finale to the show (Come What May, etc...)
???!!!!

Hey Maestro, you forgot to mention John Leguizamo's rendition of Nature Boy too!!Dan, the Version of Nature Boy on the Armstrong promo, is it the Bowie vocal as on the first album release?

It's the Bowie version for the first track but in The Death Scene they used John's version. Only like a half of minute of it. Actually, only 2 Lines.Clayton

There's also 2 lines from Nature Boy on the track Ascension/Nature Boy from the latest CD.I have a suspicion that there's quite a bit of overlap between the score tracks on the promo and the latest CD. Still not sure though.
You'd think the CD presentation of the best musical in ages would have been a bit easier to follow

Well, when I read your review, Ken, I was very disappointed to hear that somebody (Baz) again messed with the film versions. I mean, the guy hit a home run with the versions in the film and then he decides to muck stuff up.Just because it's possible to record vocals, orchestra, and etc. on separate tracks doesn't mean one should decide to trash the orchestra for some sort of poopy-butt "remix" stuff.
What's up with the running time of 43 minutes? Maybe we're taking this from an old LP master or something?

Finally, I thought I'd just say the "Come What May" on the 1st album is a pile of crap when compared with either of the official, authentic, as seen in the film, 100% un-messed-with film versions. What happened to that nice ending with the chorus? Why the hell is it mixed down to a nearly inaudible level with this cheezy synth stuff dominating everything? I guess I'm happy to hear that a true film version of this is included on the second volume.
I'll buy both volumes eventually, but more "limited" stuff awaits, and I'm not too concerned with these going out of print soon!

There's also 2 lines from Nature Boy on the track Ascension/Nature Boy from the latest CD.The track on the new CD just keeps McGregor's closing lines to the song ("the greatest gift, you'll ever know, is just to love. And be loved in return") which is true to the film.
However, if you watch the movie, the camera moves past John Leguizamo who sings the two lines ("There was a boy. A very strange enchanted boy") a few moments before we push in on Ewan and close with his line. CD2 omits this.
In watching the movie to see what songs/cues one could rip to build a slightly closer soundtrack, it really is only the Overture one can do unless you keep some ambient sound effcts and dialogue in there which I'm just not willing to do.
This leaves about six or seven tracks of unreleased stuff on the Armstrong promo, but still not very much. It's a shame it doesn't even seem that great a promo. I don't believe that superb cue that underscores Satine getting really ill (chapter 18 on the DVD) is even on there.I'm still trying to see the logic in the stupidity of altering the music for commercial release on a movie like Moulin Rouge. People see the movie, love the music, want the CD... Seems a good enough pattern to assume they want what they heard, right?

Dan & Camillu,"Satine and Christian's Theme" on the Craig Armstrong promo is actually the instrumental version of the scene where Satine "gets really ill" - it even took me quite a long time to realize this (...some nine times of viewing the movie...)

Oh, and "Satine's Theme" can be heard right after she falls from the "trapeze" after her opening number, and variations on the cue are heard throughout the movie.*******
I am myself very tempted to make the most complete, professionally remastered MOULIN ROUGE soundtrack on two CDs - and just because I want to hear it myself
- using the two official albums, the promo, and DVD, plus some source music (Offenbach, and maybe even an extended snippet of "The Sound of Music"
). But right now I don't have the time for such a big project, which also would cost me some actual money... But naturally, if people here would be more than interested in such a "friend to friend" project, I could be talked into doing it...
(Jeron and Wedge already know what kind of remastered thingies I'm able to produce).

Dan,unfortunately I don't yet have MR on DVD
(because it hasn't been published yet here in Finland; the movie is still shown at big movie theatres, and usually the Finnish distributors won't release any videos or DVDs before a movie disappears from the big screens; odd procedure, but unfortunately true). So, I can't be 100% sure if we talk about the same scene (the one where Nicole first sings "...if I should die at this very moment..." and then starts to cough blood and collapses, while in the Gothic Tower the Duke is about to leave. A closer listening to the promo track "Nicole and Christian's Theme" reveals that, even if not the exact authentic orchestral underscore, it nevertheless is an instrumental version of the song snippet and ultimately leading to the music for Nicole's collapse and further on to the Gothic Tower.

I should be in bed by now, but...Dan, I didn't quite understand what you are meaning by "banning DVDs" - do you mean censorship or just some customs clearance matters ? Whatever you meant, I can answer that Finland is quite good country to live in; the movie censorship laws changed in a better direction some years ago, and importing and exporting (even to the countries outside Europe) is very easy thanks to our membership in the European Union. For example, any package sent from U.S.A. to Finland is delivered straightly to home with other regular mail (well, if the shipment is small enough to fit through our regular mail "holes"
[-sorry my bad English-] ...So, no Customs problems at this end of the line
- and neither if I'm sending a package to almost anywhere in the world.By the way, Dan
- I hope my e-mail reached you.

So If we take the 3 available CDs, we can come up with the following tracklisiting:(I left out the songs that aren't seen complete in the film, e.g. Lady Marmalade)
1 = Soundtrack, 2 = Soundtrack Vol2, P = Promo
01. Intro (narration - first few seconds from David Bowie's "Nature Boy") [1]
02. Nature Boy (Instrumental) [P]
03. Sparkling Diamonds (original) [2]
04. Satine's Theme [P]
05. Your Song [1]
06. The Pitch [2]
07. One Day I'll Fly Away [1]
08. Elephant Love Song Medley [1]
09. Your Song (Rehearsal Montage Instrumental) [2]
10. Come What May (original) [2]
11. Like a Virgin (original) [2]
12. Satine and Christian's Theme [P]
13. El Tango De Roxanne [1]
14. The Duke's Plan [P]
15. Fool to Believe [P]
16. Your Song (After The Storm Instrumental) [2]
17. The Show Must Go On (original) [2]
18. Hindi Sad Diamonds Medley [1]
19. Death Scene [P]
20. Ascension/Nature Boy [2]
21. Closing Credits [P]I left out Satine's Theme 2 - anyone know where to slot it in?
And are the "Your Song Instrumentals" in the right place?
Ken - you're the expert

Ken,What I meant was, over there did they enforce any kind of rule on importing DVDs from say the US, even if said movie is still at cinemas in Finland. I'm basically shocked you don;t have the Rouge DVD.

In the early days of DVD, the studios really tried ot influence various governments (even here in the UK) into making sale of import DVDs illegal (though it wasnt illigal to buy the, go figure!)... They've kind of eased off on this now since the studios realised they were the source of the demand for imports really since movie release dates between US and other countries used to be so far appart.
http://www.dv-depot.com in Canada remain my fave source for Region1 DVDs. 2 to 3 day DHL shipping, and they fix it so youe never get taxed. Great prices too.Camillu, I know you left out some songs, but Meet Me in the Bedroom is there for a good length and is worth adding I think. Should come just before Your Song.
In the movie Kidman does a very brief reprise of Your Song which she sings to the Duke, she just delivers the "I hope you don't mind, I hope you don't mind... That I put down in words, how wonderful life is now you're in the world" lines. Short, but she does it really nicely. Wish we had this too!
Because we can, can CAN!
Dan
PS: I think it'd be really neat to retain the Newman Fox Fanfare in an Overture rip.

Camillu, I find it hard to believe you have the DVD and yet you can't sequence the tracks in the right order !!
...But, naturally, if you did it purposely -maybe to test my v a s t knowledge on MR
- I should probably be flattered. So, Master Ken corrects the following

"Satine and Christian's Theme" (by the way, this is stupidly titled - let's call the track "Satine Gets Sick"

should come BEFORE "Like a Virgin"."The Duke's Plan" AFTER "The Elephant Love Medley".
"Your Song: After the Storm" comes BEFORE "Hindi Sad Diamonds".
So, shame on you, Camillu !!

Dan,I think the answer to your question is a simple "no" - as I already said in my last night's post, I believe this kind of procedure (not to release the DVD before the movie has disappeared from screens) is just a crazy thing invented by the Finnish distributors. And, nevertheless, I believe that the DVD will soon be released here too - the distributor must realise that it's totally crazy to keep it away from the stores.
It's quite ironic that these kind of things happen in the same country where HARRY POTTER soundtrack was released a week BEFORE (!!) of its official release date, a couple of weeks before the movie itself hit the Finnish screens. Further irony is that usually all soundtracks appear to our stupid music stores a month or two AFTER the movie has premiered - this shows that Finnish music stores simply don't believe that anyone would like to purchase a soundtrack before seeing a movie.
The another thing is that certain U.S. or even U.K. soundtrack releases are simply IMPOSSIBLE to order from a Finnish music store, because 1) our stores simply don't WANT to import such expensive things for a single customer, and 2) our stores have very poor distributor connections - - which sometimes makes me wonder when MIRACLES such as HARRY POTTER's soundtrack sometimes DO happen here in Finland.

My Brain has been working...sort of.I am sitting here spinning disc 2 of Moulin Rouge, the extended dance numbers...etc. WE CAN RIP THESE! Doing so would give us superb extended versions of the Can Can Medley, and the Hindi performance. They can be found in The Dance section of the supplements.
The Can Can comes in two forms, one multi angle, the other plain extended. Both offer alternate takes on the music, the former is cut off slightly at the end by a sound sync beep and a call for cut. The extended one is probably the best, the only added sound effect is the cheering of the crowds. There's no dialogue.
The Extended Hindi sequence is will worth doing too I think, as is possibly the 'extended' Coup D'etat.
THIS MUST BE DONE, IT'D WORK BRILLIANT!
