I just bought my first sir Malcolm Arnold cd, and I think it is just beautiful music. Especially The Inn of Sixth Happiness. I´m not quite through this cd, but it´s worth the while. What do you think?

[Ignore my "question mark" icon above; I answered my own question]

I recommend the BRIDGE ON THE RIVER KWAI (of course), and the wonderful Marco Polo re-recording of DAVID COPPERFIELD / THE ROOTS OF HEAVEN.

My mother took me to this movie when I was a kid. She adored the movie so much that she bought the soundtrack. It was the first soundtrack to enter our home. The themes are gorgeous.

Gotta admit that I haven't heard much by him. But Tam O'Shanter (hi Timmer ) is great!

Yes, On one of the best classical concerts I went to, Tam O'Shanter was on the program, this is up there with The Sorcerers Apprentice or Hall Of The Mountain King as a piece of music that is so descriptive you can see the story running in your head! Arnold writes terrific 'Drunken' music As Lou Goldberg said elsewhere there just isn't enough of this mans scores available.

    Timmer's thought for the day # 1 : 'pissed as a newt!'....wh?????

I 2nd the idea of you picking up the Marco Polo Roots of Heaven/David Copperfield CD. There's a 2nd Chandos Arnold CD with music from Trapeze and The Belles of St. Trinians among others. If you like the Bridge on the River Kwai music, Sony should still have the CD of it in print. Artemis issued a very weak sounding CD of The Lion and Nine Hours to Rama. It's tough to reccomend because of the poor sound quality but the scores are excellent. Much harder to find are original LPs but it's the only way to hear the fantastic score to The Key as well as Arnold-conducted versions of Inn of the 6th Happiness, Roots of Heaven, and David Copperfield and The Heroes of Telemark.

Sadly, most of the Arnold film scores seem to be missing! And, the one's that are around, like Tamahine and Africa Texas Style, are to films too obscure to warrant their re-recording (though one can always hope someone will feel otherwise some day).

Lou, does that mean Chandos has decided against redoing Africa Texas Style?

Hi lars Those 'Tuesday Night' threads were over on the FSM board, I stopped doing them because of all the problems I had posting there, the final straw being #9 when I wrote it all out and couldn't post it , it's something to do (...I think?) with my IP being similar to Daniel 2's?!

    It WILL return though!

Could do Marian, but if I did I would make it a different approach!

...or at least a different title?!

JEC--I'm a little out of the loop. The guys who would know are Guenther K. from the Bernard Herrmann web site and Jay Cocks (MusicUnite) wherever he is these days. GK told me that Chandos made a great deal of money from their Arnold CDs, so I wouldn't be surprised if they go for a 3rd one. But, I never heard if they were going ahead or what might be on it. With the first 2 CDs, they had well-known films to put on the covers to help promote the CD, so I think they were reluctant to do another without a similar hook. Chandos seems a little gun shy. They'd be perfect for a Brian Easdale CD and they're too afraid it won't sell to do one.

I would love to see an Easdale CD, also how about William Alwyn? probably more well known for his classical work Alwyn did over 50 film scores including Disney's Swiss Family Robinson!

Well Chandos did one great Alwyn film music CD and just followed it up with another which I don't have yet. So, it's not like the field is empty, but they sure are taking their good time about putting out what they do have available.
