Hello,
For the second season of the Outer Limits (the series from 1964-65), musical legend Dominic Frontiere was replaced by Harry Lubin for composer. The most noticable difference in the music of Outer Limits: Season 2 was the use of the theremin. I read the passage on Lubin in my Outer Limits Companion book and it tells the reader that he was composer for the TV series ONE STEP BEYOND and that several of his pieces he composed for that series were also used for season two of Outer Limits. I looked up One Step Beyond on the Internet and I found out that the music from from this TV show had been released on CD (taken from an LP from the early 60's I believe).
I am curious about this CD. I do love the music from the Main Title and End Title from Season two of Outer Limits (which I've heard both were taken from music from One Step Beyond). I listened to the 30 second clips of the cues contained on the Beyond cd at amazon.com and while two sounded like I would greatly admire them (Fear and Weird) the others were a bit questionable.
I was wondering if anybody who has this cd (One Step Beyond: Harry Lubin) is able to describe to me the music contained One of the questions I have is:
Do any other cues from the One Step Beyond cd use a theremin? Perhaps in the more romantic, action, or slow moments?
Thank you.~Dylan

Hi,The track entire track "Fear" from One Step Beyond was available to listen to on another website I found through google (on, like the 6th page I beleive) and this cue was used both as the main and end title for The Outer Limits: Season Two (the opening titles used some of the theremin material on this track..while the end titles used a lot of the middle, which uses an orchestra).
Now, I guess my remaining question is:
Fear and Weird appeal greatly to me for their use of theremin and the creepy and almost surreal atmosphere the music posseses.
But how are the other tracks on the album?Dylan

The rest of the One Step Beyond album is less eerie in nature. One cue, A Bullfight, is like a Spanish march, another is almost a Martin Denny-like source cue. The stuff isn't bad but it's not what you'd expect after the Fear main title.I've been watching & taping Outer Limits episodes off the Sci-Fi channel---I should have realized there was an Outer Limits Companion book somewhere.

Lou,Thank you for the response. I've been doing the same thing you've been doing (taping/watching Outer Limits everyday). It was such a magnificent television series.
The Outer Limits Companion is an excellent book, a must for the Outer Limits fan. It was published in 1998 by GNP Cresendo Books. It is available through GNP's webpage and through www.amazon.com
