I finally saw the DVD this afternoon (ok, ok shame on me, I know). I won't dwell on the film, but let's just say I have never seen anything so spectacular in my life. The film is unique.

About the music - we had a few posts earlier about how Armstrong probably won the Globe becuase his score was confused with the songs. Granted.

But the question then is - who do you give credit to? The music in the film is a masterpiece - the mixing of songs, the orchestral swells, the quiet moments - everything runs like clockwork and is the best thing about the film. I noticed that the musical superviser is Marius de Vries (R+J) and so i take it him and Armstrong were mainly resposible for weaving everything together.

Who do you give credit to? Isn't this a huge piece of work which doesn't fall under any of the nomination categories? I'm not saying Armstrong should have won - but shouldn't these people get recognition somehow?

Also - anyone know where I can see a list of all the songs quoted in the film. I recognised most of them, but a few stunners were new to me.

    Thanks

For a complete list, watch the end credits on the film.

Wonderful to see that MOULIN ROUGE had yet another unexpected victim !!!

It's just a pity, Camillu, that you didn't see MR on the big screen - and with an audience - because some of the movie's magic is about interacting with the audience, sharing the emotion - and the visuals are simply MEANT for the big screen.

About who gets the credit - naturally it is the musical director Marius de Vries, and the team formed by composer Craig Armstrong, arranger Chris Elliot, music supervisor Anton Monsted, music programmer & producer Josh Abrahams, and composer/arranger Steve Hitchcock. But let's not forget that without Baz Luhrmann's talent, wit and devotion such a zany music production would not have been possible - "I dare you to make me say you've gone too far", as Luhrmann noted to everyone during the production.

As I said in another thread about the Oscars - it's truly a shame that (it appears) the Academy overlooked the musical production of MR - it really deserves a special achievement award. (And I would definitely be HAPPY if someone would correct me and tell that MR WILL GET a special recognition for its music in the Oscar ceremony).

Let's not forget that back in 1985 Quincy Jones and a group of 11 other people were nominated for a single Award of "Best Original Score" for THE COLOR PURPLE.

The music score category has been Oscar-history's the most troubled one; rules have changed almost in every five years; back in the good old days there was a music category of "Scoring of Music: Adaptation or Treatment" in which MR would have fit very nicely.

    KEN

And it's because of THAT incident that only ONE composer can be nominated.
