DIE HARD - Michael Kamen
THE LONG HOT SUMMER/SANCTUARY - Alex North
LOVE IS A MANY-SPLENDORED THING - Alfred NewmanWell, I don't know about you but I'll be buying the first one but I'm not particuarly fussed about the second two titles.
Die Hard is my all-time favourite score and, although I've owned the Ponytail bootleg for years, I'll definitely going to buy this newer first OFFICIAL release... and it's 76 minutes long instead of the bootleg's 50 minutes!

Actually, the Pony Tail boot of Die Hard runs less than 50 minutes if you deduct the cues from Man On Fire and Aliens. I also knock off that "Roy Rogers Meets Beethoven" opener, which would never fail to annoy me if I ever listened to it...NP: ARACHNOPHOBIA (Trevor Jones)

JJ, since you're the North expert, what are the 2 North scores like? And what's Die Hard like? Can't remember anything from that score.
The only one I'm interested for now is the Newman.

Well sadly I can only get one so I'll have to go with Die Hard.I'm already tossing my CDR of the Pony boot in the trash.

Well.. based on the track listing, it looks like there are tracks on the Pony Boot NOT on the Varese release..... so don't toss it so quickly.

Well I could care less about the Roy Rogers meets Beethoven cue. You take away Horner's and Scott's cues and you're looking at about 30 mins of music not on the Pony boot. Varese probaly edited some cues together and re-named them, or so it looks.posted 02-18-2002 09:42 AM PT (US)

Dinko,
I am far from an expert on Alex North, but I admire the man's music greatly, so I am very biased. You could do A LOT worse than to get the Long Hot Summer. A lot worse. It's Alex North, man.

Varese's Die Hard album is 76 minutes long, dude, whereas the Pony boot is only 50 minutes.

So don't throw it out - that's all I'm saying. (Get the Varese release, certainly!)

Your guys are too funny....there is an 83min. boot out there of DIE HARD as well, which we won't need anymore, thanks to Varese
so forget that and the Pony Boy.Good job guys! Can't wait to hear all three

And the most important thing to remember of all is that NONE of these releases have/or will have(more than likely)the opening sleigh bell title chime, which seems to be the thing everyone wanted(at least everyone I've ever discussed the score with).

Well, I'll get all three.I have to say I do have some reservations about Alex North. I have a hard time connecting to his music. But it is obvious that he was a major talent and I probably have not heard the right North score yet.
I was glad to see that they are willing to look at projects of a Golden Age nature.
As far as competition for FSM all I can say is; good. There are still plenty of scores that having a release for would be beneficial and if competition means we get to hear more of them, then let it be so!
(Between FSM discs, Young Sherlock Holmes, Marco Polo, Percepto, Prometheus and Varese, these guys are keeping me happily broke. Kudos to everyone involved in these projects to preserve and present this music to score lovers everywhere.)

THANK YOU VARESE!
I've also got the pony boot of Die Hard, but I went ahead and ordered the varese release today anyway. I'm excited to finally hear some of those cues! The way i see it, not only does it have more music (except for the opening sleigh bells unfortunately), but since there are only 3000 copies, this score, like the rest of the varese club cd's will become fairly valuable. I'm looking forward to see what else they release.Rich

Die Hard? Very good, I want that one. Dinko: It's mostly variations (some of them in Christmas style) of Beethoven's Ode to Joy - at least that's what I remember from watching the movie. Some really fine stuff there.quote:

I'm definitely ordering DIE HARD; I'm considering the Alex North as well. But I've got to save some £££££ for Silver Streak and Young Sherlock.posted 02-18-2002 04:40 PM PT (US)

So, those are the new Club titles, huh? I would've been here sooner, but I wanted to get the info straight from the horse's mouth. Like last time, it seems that I'm remotely interested in acquiring one of the titles; in this case, it's Die Hard. Speaking of which...quote:

Why the hell did VS decide to make Die Hard a limited release? Only making 3000? What's the point in THAT?!?

While most of this topic has been about Die Hard, a long-awaited title for many, it's The Long Hot Summer that really peaks my interest.Originally on Roulette records and a later Japanese re-issue, it's one of my favorite North scores (and it's the LP I had him autograph when I met him). The score is low key but wonderful and has delights like the jazzy Eula's theme. I've seen Sanctuary but don't remember the score off-hand.
As for Love is A Many-Splendored Thing, this won an Oscar for Newman back in 1955. Most people know it for the oft-played title song, but as the film was set in Korea, it gave Newman the opportunity to write an asian-flavored score that is good in its own right. I have a suite of it from one of the old Cinema records boots, but this is just one more reason to kiss 20th Century-Fox these days for making this stuff available.
FSM has issued some Newman scores like Best of Everything and A Man Called Peter, but this is something I'd pick up before those.

It's because of time. I'm glad we're getting 3000. It doesn't seems that much, but then, comparing the regular CD buying public, there are a substantial quantity being offer to a such a small exclusive group of people.

of all the titles that have limited runs of 3,000 copies from ALL the various labels, only ONE title, that I am aware of, has ever sold out (with a few getting pretty close): The Towering Inferno by John Williams.posted 02-19-2002 11:03 AM PT (US)

Yah and think about how Film Score Monthly is pretty well known among the soundtrack community. Varese Club is pretty much appealing to that core demographic at least.

Yes, but the 2-CD boot is:a.) A bootleg.
b.) Awful sounding.Get the official one, so that five years from now, we won't have to listen to you bitch about how unfortunate it is that you don't have an original.

Just got in the new Die Hard. The good news is that it sounds terrific. The not-so-good news is that sleigh bell fanfare from the beginning of the film is not on there, as far as I can tell. I have a hunch this is something that was cooked up in post-production.

The cue late in the film, and I'm not sure of the title, where McClane confronts Gruber, who is holding Holly hostage, and everyone starts to laugh, while McClane has the machine gun taped to his back...there is a bit there with bells, that I always assumed was re-used for the title, plus a bass drone from some other cue, plus a 'smack' sound effect...I always assumed this is the 'title' cue.Could this composite be the lost main title? Is it too sad I can remember the names of all these characters?!?

a.)I don't bitch.
b.)Once you convert this to Australian dollars, add P+H and convert that to Australian dollars, it would mean I'd be paying about $50 for one CD that I already have where the sound quality isn't so bad I feel I need to spend $50 to get it back.
I refuse to pay $50 for a CD, regardless of how limited or special it is.
