This question is for Herrmann experts.

The compilation recordings that Herrmann made in the '70s were issued on CD in two different forms. Mobile Fidelity issued them on 3 (LP length) CDs; then seperately, Decca issued the same music on 2 filled CDs.

Both issues are out of print (of course!). The Decca issues retailed for a mere $10 each, so buying those would be a no-brainer...if they were still available. As it happens, the Mobile Fidelity versions are much more readily available (sealed, even) on secondary markets (for around $20 each).

My question is, which issues have better sound quality? If the answer is the Mobile Fidelities, then I'll just get those, since they're readily available. Otherwise, I'll keep an eye out for used Deccas.

    Hey Cid!

I may not have the expert info you are looking for, but wanted to add that I'm a bit tired of the same London recordings from the 70's being repackaged, individually, mobile fidelity, Varese Masters Film Music....they are all the same suites right? I have all the London Phase 4 CDs of these, and they sound great to my ears. I'll be curious to see what others come up with...

    NP:Wolfen-Rejected(Safan)Atonal heaven!

    Best,
    Sean

Yeah well, all the different releases were evidently not enough, since the music is out of print. If you're tired of them, please send them my way. :-)

There are only two of the Deccas? Then I guess I have them all: "Great Film Music - Bernard Herrmann" and "Music from Great Film Classics by Bernard Herrmann".

Got both cheap one and three years ago I think. Sound on both is very good.

Yes, those are the two, corresponding to 3 LPs. Well, there's also "Music from Great Hitchcock Movie Thrillers", which corresponds to a 1968 LP. (I excluded this by specifying Herrmann's '70s recordings). That one is still in print.

Correction. That CD is also out of print. However, the contents have reappeared on "Psycho: Great Hitchcock Movie Thrillers" (Decca #436797), which is in print.

I did not find any sonic difference between the Mobile Fidelity and the London Phase 4.The Mobile fidelity gold cd's look cool though.

The Mobile Fidelitys don't sound any better than the Decca/Phase 4's, and some of them have less music than the cheaper releases!

    Go figure.
