This just in: John Williams will be the music director for this year's Academy Awards. He
will co-conduct with Mark Watters, who conducted with John at the Olympics oening
    ceremonies.

This is great news, I think, for John, because the last time he was the Academy conductor, he won an Oscar, for Jaws. So maybe this is just fate coming back to visit the master again!

Hey, we need every bit of fortune we can get in order to get Oscar number six!

And maybe those of you who are always ranting about never watching the Oscars again wil actually tune in this year. Wouldn't it be cool if they did a selection of tunes from the scores, and he "accidentally" messes up James Horner's? Which makes me wonder how Williams perceives Horner? Probably as someone who got fame the wrong way.

*the name of John Williams starts to ooze from Ken's ears and nose*

Some years ago I would have jumped of joy hearing such news, but especially this year these kind of news seem only ridiculous - Hollywood is full of excellent conductors (who would probably need the job) so WHY ON EARTH they choose John Williams ? - I have my hunch: Because Williams WON'T win any awards during the show.

Ken: Why shouldn't they choose Williams he's the most well known living composer right now, and it will most definetly ensure more people will tune in as you can see from the posts above. So I don't see what your problem is.

I mean who cares if you don't like Potter? You have to like something that he's composed. So why not be happy that you get to see the maestro conduct a live orchestra one more time?

    I always watch.

I cheer if my choice wins and say: "Well! The Academy finally got it right!!"

If my choice loses, then I say: “It figures! These awards are meaningless anyway! Who cares who wins!”

Then I get some fresh popcorn and wait for the next award in the most frustrating overly long show I watch faithfully ever year.

I would suspect Williams has respect for James Horner, would he REALLY be as small minded as to mess up his music while conducting...I think not!

    ...funny thought though?!

When Williams goes for his Award, Mark Watters will be conducting

I have video of an Evening at Pops with Williams conducting music by Horner

    Jz,

apparently YOU care if I don't like POTTER

...although the magicless POTTER was not the reason for my earlier post above. Again I say that there are so many good composers/conductors in Hollywood who could make some great use of any extra "promotion" - as you said, Jz, John Williams is (probably) "the most well-known living composer right now", so Williams definitely doesn't need any extra promotion.

But I have to confess I AM looking forward to hear will Williams make the "usually-terrible" arrangements of the Oscar orchestra to sound better.

Plus, I want to see when Jennifer Connelly goes pick up her statuette
although odds are little bit against her...

Hopefully by the end of the show Williams will have the Hobbit theme coming out of his ears.

Can't wait to see him in action.

..."Can't wait to see him in action"...

    I'm just thinking here aloud
    - but isn't it exciting to see the hand, the stick, and some of the back of John Williams' head at this year's Awards show ?
(Because I recall that these are the only body parts seen of the conductor below the stage).

This is great. Finally someone who will make the music sound good, unlike Bill Conti. And it will be wonderful for Johnny to say hi to Howard when Mr. Shore is handed his Oscar.

not that it would make a difference,
but please use real words next time
    - "uhm" and some rolling eyes can mean a thousand things.

    Thank You.

Well, at least that hack, Bill Conti, won't be up there for the umpteenth time.

(That actually sounds a little harsher than my true opinion of Bill, but let's be honest - he hasn't had a decent scoring job in YEARS!)
