Maybe I'm wrong, but remember there being only two nominees for the last few years.
What gives? The nominees are voted on by a special panel. What they do is rate each of the sevn or eight finalists on a scale of 10. If a film gets an average score of 8.5 or higher, it gets nominated. If only one film gets that score, the film gets a special achievement award. But there can never be more than three nominees.
The same applies to makeup and visual effects. See this link for help:

Further point in MOULIN ROUGE is that
the movie is PURPOSELY "over the top"
- when such a thing is mixed with extreme dramatics (such as the ending), it appeals to audience's feelings in a witty way, kind of like asking "Would you believe this could happen to YOU?" - Usually the audience is divided into those two separate parts: the cynical non-believers who see the attempt only as a stupid piece of badly made entertainment, and to those who can reflect their own life's situation into the characters and the story and thus are believing totally in what they see, hear, and experience.I myself belong to the latter part, although I'm capable of seeing MOULIN ROUGE also from a technical point of view, as a motion picture - I know that the movie has its flaws even in storytelling, and some of the "music video" montages indeed are a little-bit-too-much, but again, MOULIN ROUGE appeals to me because of the enormous amount of EMOTION - heart - in the actors, the direction, and the simplistic story.
In my sincere opinion our world would need so much more of movies like MOULIN ROUGE, to remind us busy and heartless people that even though life is fragile it REALLY IS beautiful and worth of living. That's why I hope MOULIN ROUGE would win the Best Picture's Oscar.

Re: Memento's screenplay nomination. I had the opportunity to ask a member of the Writers' Guild about it, and this was his response:quote:
So there you are. "Best Original Screenplay."
Typical Hollywood madness. It got in that catagory because the short story it was based on was not actually published until after the movie opened.Re: Moulin Rouge. Again, I'm sorry, Ken.
While I did find the film's vibrant production design a delight, I was unimpressed by the rest of the film. I have no problems with films being purposely over-the-top (indeed I usually enjoy it very much), but I felt that Moulin Rouge was over-the-top at the expense of the emotion. It was the zaniness which began the story that sabotaged my emotional involvement later on. I was still fully capable of enjoying the music, and I was very impressed by the voices of Ewan and Nicole, but for me it completely failed in delivering its story. For films with true heart, my favorites this year were Ghost World and The Royal Tenenbaums. Two films with compelling characters and well-told stories that really touched me on a personal level Moulin rouge simply couldn't reach.
But obviously it did reach some people, and I'm glad that you can find so much to revel in. I'm sad to say I found it emotionally inhibiting.
Respectfully,
Kirk

Kirk,I do admit that my tastes have always been quite against anything normal - and MOULIN ROUGE certainly is a film against everything normal. We probably can rest our cases by saying that it's again more of a matter in tastes than anything else.

True. We agree to disagree, then.
But for my own part I should say that I am usually drawn to the abnormal as well. It's just that this time I wasn't.
At any rate
