Howdy everyone. The MovieMusic Store will soon be stocking product from this label. Now's your chance to put in your vote to influence which titles are available first!
If you need a list of releases, let it be known and someone will chime in.
Thanks for your interest!

How about Dragonslayer? I'm sorry I didn't pick it up years ago when I saw it on the shelf.

Yah, yah, we need an album listing, since I thought most of their stuff was OOP....Id love an original Dragonslayer too, since my cdr has a skip in it, but it was a ltd. ed.

If it's not OOP, I'll put in votes for NIGHT DIGGER(Herrmann, one of his greatest, misunderstood, unheard of masterpieces) THE QUIET EARTH/IRIS(Charles, gorgeous stuff) and CHEYENNE AUTUMN(North, nuff said!)
Best,

Good man, PK!I'll just randomly comment on these, since I have many of them

HERRMANN, BERNARD AT THE MOVIES (ATMCD2003)
This is great, has NIGHT DIGGER, BATTLE OF NERETEVA, both great albums, and 5mins. from SISTERS
NORTH, ALEX AT THE MOVIES (ATMCD2004)
This has a nice suite of DRAGONSLAYER
STAR TREK VOLUME ONE (LXCD703)
STAR TREK VOLUME TWO (LXCD704)
These are both very good, a bit different than the ost's, but well played, some very good music on them.
THE MAGNIFICENT AMBERSONS (1942) (PRCD1783)
Terrific Herrmann score, great notes, highly recommended dramatic stuffTHE INQUIRER (PRCD1789)
Good compilation of Herrmann, with a killer 20min. suite from THE KENTUCKIAN, among other things...nice intro to the composer.THE CARDINAL (PRCD1778)
Hey, I thought this was impossible to find!
THE BLUE LAGOON CD (SCCD1018)
Essential Poledouris, my favorite of his, next to CONANANASTASIA … THE MYSTERY OF ANNA (SCCD1015)
Very nice Rosenthal score, gorgeous 7min. finale, swings between romantic, atonal, jazz, dramatic scoringTIME AFTER TIME CD (SCCD1014)
Essential Rozsa, Waltz is superb, one of his greatest melodies! Strong orch. action, romance, suspense.ICEMAN (SCCD1006)
A TOWN LIKE ALICE (SCCD1013)
Haven't heard these...anyone have thoughts on Bruce Smeaton's work??KING KONG (SCCD901)
A bit unecessary, since Marco Polo nailed this score, but its still a fun album, good bombastic 'concert' take on the lengthy scoreWhat do you think Sirs?

RCA Spain has released The Cardinal and Raintree County. Those versions have the original artwork. I don't know if it would be cheaper to stock those or the Preamble ones.

[/B]The Preamble version of THE CARDINAL is not the complete original soundtrack, lacking the "Alleluia" vocal track at least, maybe more. The Spanish BMG is the complete thing, and probably cheaper (I paid $17 for mine). I don't think there's any real difference between the two RAINTREEs, so go for the cheaper one.
I believe that all 3 of these labels are owned by John Stephen Lasher, who also originated the Entr'Acte LP label. These were all high quality releases. I hope the MM store will always include THE BEST YEARS OF OUR LIVES in stock, as this is certainly one of the ten best film scores ever written. I'd also like to see the Herrmann titles carried, since I've missed a few good ones like SISTERS and would like to pick them up before they disappear forever.

IMHO, no collection should be without:Best Years of Our Lives
Sisters
Time After Time
The Razor's EdgeOf the rest two struck me as slightly more important than the rest:
Continuum/Journeys/Voyage of the Damned
(as one should try both Schifrin scores and concert works)

There is a concert work on the Schifrin disc, Continuums I think it is, a 22min. piece for solo percussionist, who IIRC had to read 6 copies of the score...can anyone comment on this? Is it dull? Or as exciting as the idea sounds?Sean

Your collection should be as big as you want it to be. However, extreme caution should be exercised. At a certain undefinable point, you don't own the collection, it owns you!You have reached this stage when you spend any time cataloging, creating databases with custom reports and investigating how libararies handle this sort of thing. It is already too late when you have a list to keep from duplicating titles.

You can have 2 CDs or 2000. But if you want to have a collection of the best film music has to offer there are certain must-haves that I believe should be there.

Putting aside the mishmash about who's got the largest weiner, the first handful of titles from this group of labels is now in and available.
It's funny, I've been listening to my personal copies of these scores and can only notice how refreshing these are (despite them being years and years old) after listening to more recent scores. Man, this Battle of Neretva is good stuff. If you don't believe me, read Doug Fake's take on the music over at Intrada. Classic Herrmann.posted 03-05-2002 05:20 PM PT (US)

I wholeheartedly recommend Jack Nitzsche's score to The Razor's Edge. It's my favorite score from him and I rank it pretty high on my own list of favorites.

Really Mike, what a fantastic soaring main theme on Razor's Edge. Lee Holdridge may have well been an orchestrator on this one the way these strings soar!

Pete--Thanks for stocking these and it looks like you took my suggestions too!Everyone--So we can settle this once and for all, let it be known that I have the largest phallus of anyone here at the board
Dana--I will have to get back to you on my suggestions for what the Must-Haves in any collection should be. In the meantime, I suggest you take a look at my member profile and see some of the scores I have listed there as my favorites.
BMJ--Heavy Metal arrived! And for praising the merits of The Razor's Edge there is a place awaiting you in heaven.

Thank you, Monsieur Lou. I remember happening to flip onto this movie while it was playing on cable one day. I had always dismissed it as total garbage. But sitting down and giving it a chance allowed me to discover one of my favorite film scores and buried in the film were great performances from Denholm Elliot and the beautiful Theresa Russell. I immediately fell in love with her... Little did I know that she was styled after the equally beautiful Louise Brooks until I saw one of her silent films in school and then I fell in love with her, as well.
