A very dear friend of mine, an older gentleman (HO! What does that mean? He's about 30?), has been passing all his old CDs onto minidisc. A lover of "light" music, he has bequeathed me in the past with many suprememely interesting historical nuggets, like stuff from the De Wolfe library. It's good to get an education! So, his latest frisbee was PIANO CONCERTOS FROM THE MOVIES, on Naxos, recorded in Dublin in 1995. Apart from the annoyingly corny (for some, though I've grown to like them) staples like the Warsaw Concerto, Cornish Rhapsody and Dream Of Olwen (my God, how I remember my dear late dad), there are also good renditions of Herrmann's HANGOVER SQUARE and Rozsa's SPELLBOUND.
And in the liner notes, I learned that somebody called Jack Beaver, apart from contributing to the CD his Portrait Of Isla from the forgotten Ed Wallace movie THE CASE OF THE FRIGHTENED LADY, also did most of the music for Hitchcock's THE THIRTY-NINE STEPS, despite receiving no screen credit.
Good stuff on this release. I put it on last night to fall asleep to, and it worked a treat (though I don't mean it's boring).

CDs from a record fair:
Swordfish / Paul Oakenfold (with a bit of help from Young) ***/***** (quite good, especially for driving)
Cousin Bette / Boswell ***/***** (some great stuff here, though the album sequencing is crap)
Wonderland / Nyman ***/***** (some quality tracks, reminiscent of The Claim)
13 ghosts / Frizzell ***/***** (a bit chaotic)
