BAFTA have announced the nominations for the film awards. A full list is available here. And those all-important music nominations are as follows:
quote:
THE ANTHONY ASQUITH AWARD
for achievement in Film Music
AMELIE Yann Tiersen
THE LORD OF THE RINGS Howard Shore
MOULIN ROUGE Craig Armstrong
MULHOLLAND DRIVE Angelo Badalamenti
SHREK Harry Gregson-Williams/John Powell
I can't help but feel that Moulin Rouge is going to win, but it's nice to see Shore Badalamenti & Tiersen getting nominated. Shrek is the biggest surprise (it seems BAFTA don't have a rule about multiple composers). Didn't see that one coming!NP Poltergeist

True, but at least there's a lead nod for Ian McKellen. Although I'm not so sure that I'd have called it a leading role.
Still, it is nice to see that Nicole Kidman has been nominated for The Others, & not Moulin Rouge. Well, I think it is, anyway.NP Blue Max

And apart fromthe BAFTA news, the entire cast of LOTR has been nominated for SAG awards.quote:
Rings was the only genre film to be singled out by SAG for its annual awards, which are widely perceived as precursors to the Oscars... McKellen (Gandalf) was nominated for outstanding performance by a male actor in a supporting role. The entire cast of Rings was nominated for outstanding performance by the cast of a theatrical motion picture/So... Woo hoo!

The "problem" with LOTR is that many of the roles are essentially leading roles (which of course means that many of them don't have too much screen time and therefore look to small for leading roles), I think. I'd probably classify Boromir as a supporting role, though it actually SHOULD be a leading role as well. Still, since Gandalf has a much more important part in the movie, he should certainly be seen as a leading role.

That, and leading actor is what New Line is trying to get him nominated for. It's been on those "for your consideration" posters. They're also pushing Elijah Wood as a supporting actor, which I think is much stranger...Anyway, these music nominations are satisfactory.
Re: the multiple composers rule... remember that it exists only technically at the Oscars. Remember Gladiator? I'm sure Moulin Rouge will be nominated, even though it's technically disqualifed by the participation of Chris Elliot and Steve Hitchcock.

It's also disqualified because the score is "diluted by the pre-eminent" use of (non-original) songs. If it's on the list of eligible scores for the Academy to vote for, then the Academy will have lots of explaining to do.

I agree, good to see Tiersen nominated. I think "Amelie" is a brilliant score and film. Despite this, I think Howard Shore deserves to win for LOTR.NP: Amelie - Tiersen

Well at least Robbie Coltrane (Hagrid) got a nod for HP. Also I was suprised that Planet of the Apes got nominated even though it deserves an award for make-up.

Am I the only one miffed at the fact BAFTA don't acknowlegde the film's title as Fellowship of the Ring?As a collective yes. All 3, Lord of the Rings, but this puts a worry into me that come the time of Two Towers and Return of the King getting possible nominations in fields other than technical, it'll be seen as the same thing as Fellowship and not get nominated for as much.

Well, isn't LOTR:FOTR really just 1/3 of a film anyways?

Of course, I may be completely misinformed about what editors do, but what's really annoying is the fact that LOTR:FOTR was nominated for best editing. No offense to any fans of John Gilbert, I loved the movie, but come on, editing? I know we were just discussing on the technical mistakes that the movie was so full of under another topic, and I don't believe I have seen any major commercial movies so full of loopholes when it comes to editing (especially when they occur during really emotional sequences and regardless what some may contest, these mistakes DO take away from intended impact of the scenes). So how those brilliant BAFTA voters ignore the fact that several scenes just didn't link at all is beyond me.

It's on the island of Oahu, in Hawaii.
But seriously - I didn't think the score was good enough to get a Golden Globe nomination; nice to know the Brits aren't as slushy as the HFP.

Haha. Well said, Dan. I was born in Honolulu, actually, and lived on Pearl Harbor for about 16 months before moving back to the rest of the US. What a shame!Mike

Marian,There are literally people who don't realise this is a trilogy too. I've heard of people going to see Fellowship and hearing some around them bickering about what a rubbish ending FOTR had and how there "must be a sequel or something".... Even the TV spots quote it as Lord of the Rings.
