    Saw this flick yesterday.
Overall it's not too bad. First part follows the book pretty well. Second part is totally different. But even though the story was changed somewhat, the overall spirit of the book is retained. So it's a pretty good adaptation overall.

Ed Shearmur's score is very good. There are many different themes and motifs. It's very well orchestrated. Each track fit perfectly the movie and would stand alone very well.
There's just a tiny problem for the soundtrack album: each track was different from the others. This isn't a case of theme and variation. For each track Shearmur did something different. So to truly represent the score, we'd have to get a complete score release, which is unlikely to happen on a single CD edition.

Anyway, good movie. Great score. Can't wait for OST to come out. Hopefully it will be a 70 minute CD.

CD comes out Feb 5th and is on RCA Victor. I'm looking forward to it, I liked his K-PAX.

    Agreed.

The movie was better than I expected...mostly due to the subtle humor. While Shearmur's score starts off a little rockily during first battle scene, it gets better as the movie continues. It ends up leaving one with a few memorable themes. Another solid effort from Shearmur of the sort that the like-the-same-ol-orchestral-thematic-non-experimentalist-score-fans just eat up. I'd have to say its a soundtrack worth having.

I am looking forward to both the movie and score. Maybe someday also there will be a score release of Shearmur's Miss Congeniality

Well, as of now there are no plans to officially release those scores (BLUE STREAK, CHARLIE'S ANGELS, CRUEL INTENTIONS, etc...) but you never know....

I seem to remember feeling the same about the slow and wincing start of this movie. But after a while, it picks up. And I particularly remember there was some great music accompanying the dual finale in the grass.

I was very impressed with this movie and score. Both were alot of fun and well-done. Of course, I should have expected a good score for a Kevin Reynolds movie. He seems to like big adventure scores and Ed Shearmur really surprised me.
For me, this is the first good score and movie of the new year.

I was surprised with how much I liked the movie, and the score as well. Some high points stand out for me musically:

The journey to Monte Cristo to find the treasure.

The moment Edmond wakes up on the beach to find that he has escaped.

    The final fight.

Good score. I might get that CD on the 5th (if finances allow).

Agreed with all...a movie that succeeds on multiple levels...after the squirm inducing forst 10-minutes.

I remember some of the quieter moments of the score...those in Chateau d'If were excellent.

Also must add my thoughts on the film and score. Thoroughly enjoyed both! The beginning 10 minutes was a little rocky, but I was completely captivated afterwards and loved Shearmur's score. I do hope the album release is decent, including the highlights listed above plus the classy cue for the big party at Monte Cristo's house.

I would love that so much. Also, a CD release of "Tales from the Crypt: Demon Knight" (recorded in London) is necessary.

I enjoyed the movie and the score very much. A good fun movie with a very good score by Shearmur - who I never disdained as a composer, but was never really impressed with up until now (I have not heard much of him). I'm sure I will get the album some time, but probably not the day it comes out. Has to be in the budget, dontcha know.

OK, finally got the album and it is an absolute delight, sure to be a favorite of the year for me. I knew this when I saw the film itself!
Shearmur accomplishes so much in the score, in terms of melodic and harmonic development, texture, and all sections of the orchestra. It's intelligent, but not aloof. It's emotional, but not gushing. The action portions are riveting but not showy acrobatics. And I love his semi-classical "Invitation to the Ball" cue - what a treat!

Any other score suggestions from Shearmur?

Mr. TV, I agree. I've been listening to this CD more than most this past week. As for recommendations, there's only one: Wings of the Dove. Can't recommended it enough.

Unfortunately, it's one of those Milan releases that went out of print within 24 months of being released. If you are having a problem finding it, let me know. I should be able to help out.

Hey, PeterK, I've been trying to locate Wings of the Dove and it does not seem available anywhere, as you mentioned. Would be able to offer help in finding a copy?

Shearmur's score is a "Grassy Knoll" effort for me. On the one hand, I really love his music. On the other, much bigger, ten-fingered hand, it's way too eclectic.

Oh, the agony! He had such a powerful and, I believe, variable theme with which to work. I wish he'd have done so....

It sure would seem as though Shearmur was more concerned with producing a compact disc than a sound underscore.

But I'm sure it's a damn fine disc all the same....

I really like this score. True, it is uneven in places, but a strong piece of work nonetheless. Stylistically it reminds me a lot of Michael Kamen's stuff, particularly around the time he did The Three Musketeers. Probably no coincidence that Shearmur was Kamen's assistant a while back, so I'm not surprised some of the K-Man's magic rubbed off a little.
