Watched 'Warriors of Virtue' on TV last night. I thought I'd pretty much seen it all with Ninja Turtles, a shark that can track a plane, 40ft tongues etc but kung-fu kangaroos??Interestingly, the cinematography was done by Peter Pau (CTHD Oscar winner) but this one's definitely for the kids.
The review over at Filmtracks is singing its praises and recommends the score 'to all film score enthusiasts'. Did anyone else enjoy the score? Is it to be recommended?

Rochelle, Warriors of Virtue is awesome! I still deem it as one of Don Davis' very best. Highly recommended.Jeron

I like Warriors of Virtue very much. My favorite tracks are Tunnel of Blades and Marsupial Arabesque. If you want the score make sure you get the Prometheus release, it has alot more score than the Virgin release.

Agreed. It may be Davis' most adventurous score to date. A great listen!

I'm no longer too sure about how good it is.
I saw the film when it originally came out on video, and remember loving the score. I didn't know about Prometheus Records back then, and had never heard of Intrada, so I just bought the commercial release on Kids Rhino Records.
The 20 minutes of score on it are great.
But then a month ago I had to do some school work on a movie, and I chose to compare Ronny Yu's The Bride With White Hair and his Warriors of Virtue. So I paid much more attention to the score, and it didn't seem that good anymore. Much of it sounded like typical underscore... fits the movie, wouldn't listen to it separately. The rest didn't seem too great. The theme is cute. The action cues were nice. And the orchestrations are good. But overall, it felt somewhat weak.
I'm contradicting what I said a few months ago, but if you're going to get this score, you might want to get a used copy of the Rhino CD. Shouldn't be too hard to find.

I own the Prometheus release, and I'm not real excited with the thing.I know many people love it, so you should probably give it a try anyway.

the classical references in the music annoy me.

What Jeron said! This is a wonderful, fulfilling, staggering adventure/fantasy score, absolutely! Varied and brimming with themes, although you may not pick up on many of them at first listen (I didn't).I find the classical references intriguing more than anything else (I think Jeron agrees with me here). Many of them seem rather calculated, almost as though they were added only after the original cue had been completed. It's something you're meant to hear. My theory is supported by the fact that Davis does the exact same thing (with a full "confession") in his piano piece "Illicit Felicity."
Haven't seen the movie. Get the Prometheus CD. A wonderful, fanciful, A+ work!

I've got my eye on the Prometheus CD which is available right here at MM but was wondering what this was? It seems to the same release in terms of tracks and time but different label.

Actually, Rochelle, that appears to be the CD that Richard Street once asked about in this thread. We never did find out exactly what it was, but his theory about a locally pressed promo seems plausible.Kirk

Kirk articulated my opinion perfectly. He's pretty good at that (our tastes are similar.) I agree, the classical references to me are quite entertaining... they make the score that much more fun and intellectually engaging.JJ's just a retard who doesn't know what he's talking about. A fact we must all remember when dealing with him. Besides, he's from west Texas. That should explain everything...

I looked at that eBay link and the artwork is exactly the same as the one I picked up in Denver; I wondered if it was a local promo release as it was recorded by the Colorado Symphony Orchestra. As far as I can recall it's exactly the same as Prometheus' disc, trackwise and timewise.NP: THE REPLACEMENT KILLERS (Harry Gregson-Williams)

Hey thanks people for your valuable insights. It arrived today and I'm listening to it now. Sounds good so far.In a few days, I'll get to listen to the full score and I'll let you know what I think of it overall.
My life is so sad at the moment. In the past four weeks I've received originals for:
Boy Who Could Fly (Percepto)
Young Sherlock Holmes (Intrada)
Die Hard (Varese)
Swordfish (Intrada)and I haven't even listened to them due to lack of time. Whoa is me!!!
Back soon.....
Cheers

I got this in my last order from Peter and just got a chance to listen to it...I enjoy it, but I don't think its quite up to the hype that FilmTracks gave it.The artwork/bootlet seem pretty poorly produced though, looks like something out of the 80's!

My first impression was the same. But it does grow on you.
Its a long score so give it sometime to sink in.
Also...I felt the score doesn't really start moving until track 8 and onwards.

I originally bought the regular release (with songs) on the cheap and liked the score tracks quite a lot.So, I bought the Prometheus release... and came to find that everything I liked (the main themes) was already on the regular. It's the only Prometheus CD I can think of that didn't get much playtime (except for perhaps Delerue's Platoon/Salvador, which I sold).

Awww...I miss Rochelle! As for WARRIORS OF VIRTUE, it's a pretty good soundtrack, although a bit too long and mickey-mousey at times. Here's a thread I did on the score over at FSM:
