I think both were equally good. Perhaps Sci-Fi isn't "in" this year.
To be honest with you, I was a little more touched by A Beautiful Mind than LOTR. Half the time I didn't know who was who in that movie which made it a little hard to follow.

    Hahahahahaha...
I am quite sure the people who voted for this prized had the same problem. That's why they voted for "A Beautiful Mind"!!

Has anyone seen Gosford Park and can explain why Robert Altman won over Peter Jackson?

I have no idea why Altman won over Ron Howard. Most eccentric films award? I really enjoyed Fellowship Of The Rings and felt Shore wrote the best score, but I felt that A Beautiful Mind was most deserving for best picture. It was superb, and Crowe was amazing. Howard's direction was excellent.

Sure, because the "HFP" likes to have older directors win. I'm a put put off that "Mind" won, but that was my second choice LOTR being my first.

PS: To correct Kevin Spacey, no "Shrek" was not the highest grosing film of 2001, that belongs to the one and only "Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone."

Well you all know Hallmark makes those real sappy TV movies, well here was one that was directed by a big time "artist" with real Movie Stars. Hell people just love those Hallmark movies, real tear jerkers just like those Hallmark TV commercials.

Now there's a great outlook! Is it just me, or do I detect a bit of cynicism?

You don't have to have seen Gosford Park to understand why Altman won. The voters figured that Jackson has plenty of chances in the future (and just the next two years) to win the award. I don't mean to be morbid, but Altman doesn't have as much time left to win as Jackson does.

Incidentally, I did see Gosford Park, and Altman does a wonderful job juggling the thirty-something characters. It's a shame the story couldn't have been juggled just as well.

As for A Beautiful Mind winning, I still haven't seen the film. But I'm getting there.
