I'm sure several of you have already seen this, but according to CNN, Peter Jackson has confirmed that there will be a Director's Cut of the film running at nearly 4-hours released on DVD. Initially, they indicated that there would be 40-minutes of deleted scenes.Hopefully we'll get a nice release that includes both version of the film, but I'm not holding my breath. I hope they don't pull a Lucas staggered release...if both editions are released at the same time I will be sure to snag the deluxe set.
Also, I'm guessing a DTS release is most likely out of the questions...poo....

Bah - old news.I mentioned it weeks ago.
http://www.moviemusic.com/mb/Forum1/HTML/008037.htmlAlso, I wouldn't be surprised if there is a movie-only version of the DVD (theatrical cut) followed by the more extensive multi-disc Director's Cut version with extras a few weeks later..... (a little birdy might have told me something......)

40 minutes!? That's nothing compared to the latest rumours (RUMOURS!), which claim that the Director's Cut will run nearly 4.5 hours and include the Old Forest and Tom Bombadil. We'll see...

Good, that means we might get a 3 disc set. Like 2 hours on one disc, 2 hours on another disc and disc 3 the goodies. I mean, they have to have commentary, it would be a crime not too

Well, since we're at the rumor mill..I heard that the DVD in August will be the theatrical version, plus trailers, plsu some extras.
The complete LOTR DVD set, which would come out in 2004 would have the extended cuts and much more goodies, including commentary tracks.

So true Dan...but what was actually of most interest to me (which you did not mention
) was the mention of a 4-hour cut direct from Jackson's mouth...All in all, old news...new news...all good news.

You mean they're including scenes they didn't even film? Wow, even Georgie Porgie didn't go that far for the fans...

Early reports on the film (when it was still being worked on), as well as Howard Shore said that the rough cut of the film was only about 3.5 hours long.So... ya put those 40-minutes back in to the theatrical cut, and you get a little over 3.5 hours.... sounds more realistic to me than all this "4.5 hour" stuff...
Add to the the fact that Shore ONLY wrote a little over 3 hours of music - and there is a crapload of music in the film, and unless Jackson is gonna reuse music from other places in the film, I'd say that 3.5 hours is looking more and more "on target".

Brian: I want the box set, too. But I know I won't wait. I have several releases of some CDs, so why not have several releases of these DVDs as well...

Dan: 3.5 hours does sound more realistic, but remember that there were rumours of scenes that were shot but hadn't even gone through postproduction in time for PJ's final cut. Also, from what I remember (STILL haven't seen it a third time - soon!), there were lots of music-less scenes as well. (I'm not saying that the 4.5 rumour is true. I doubt it, but I think it COULD be true)

I remember reading very early on that Jackson had a total of 11-hours shot for all three films...which would keep 3.5-4 hours in line.I certainly hope they don't spend any time completing post production on certain scenes...especially amid rumours that they will struggle to meet the release date for Two Towers...I can't wait until Summer'03...the horror!

Well...with a nice DVD, I think waiting would be easier.
No Bombadil apparently, but it looks like the DC will really run slightly over four hours! (And without Bombadil, this leaves more room for more important stuff; I just wish the Barrow Wights were in) More here.posted 01-15-2002 07:47 PM PT (US)

From Dark Horizons:
The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring (DVD): Speaking with The Evening Post, Director Peter Jackson has debunked various rumours flowing around. The DVD released in August will contain the theatrical print of the film (no special extended version) whilst in November a Special Edition will follow with 30 minutes extra - "I don't really want to call it the director's cut. It [the new scenes] is all drama. There is this thing on the Net. about all this gory stuff I was supposed to have shot, but I didn't. We were going for a (censor's rating) of PG13 and you can't waste time shooting stuff that you know is going to get cut. It will tee everybody up before the release of The Two Towers (in December)". The special edition DVD is also tipped to include the first part of a documentary by Wellington film maker Costa Botes on the making of the trilogy. Thanks to 'FanHalen'.Now can I say "told ya so"?

People have already begun to speculate: Why doesn't PJ want to call it a Director's Cut? Perhaps because he wants to do a "real" directors cut (rumours speak of a possible 4:30 cut) after all three movies are out. I have no idea if that's true, of course. But I certainly wouldn't object.

Or perhaps PJ follows Terry Gilliam's line of thinking in that the film that gets released should, ideally, be the director's cut. Gilliam's view is that if what gets released the first time isn't what the director wants, then he shouldn't put his name on it. (In his famous Brazil battle, one of the many letters he wrote to Sid Scheinberg suggested that if Scheinberg was so adamant about putting out his own cut, he should take Gilliam's name off and stick on his own.)I'm just speculating, of course. PJ stated publicly that no scenes with Bombadil were ever filmed, so that rumo(u)r at least can be sticken.

I think it's probably because he's quite happy with the theatrical cut to be honest. With the expanded release he's doing a James Cameron if you will, putting out a release of his film that's even more solid in its story and character development that wont appeal to everyone and can co-exist with the original release.
