    Hi Folks,

I just listen to Joel McNeelyīs beautiful score IRON WILL. It is a grand, majestic score with beautiful themes and rousing acion cues. Iīd say itīs Wyatt Earpīs little brother !

    So, what do you think?

I cannot listen to that score anymore without envisioning the trailer to TRUE LIES....

I'd say it's Bruce Broughton's red-headed step child. Just check out the credits under "Special Thanks." McNeely's score is a very great one, thats for sure, though I think it was composed when Joel was studying under Broughton... and the style certainly mirrors that.

    BAM! BAM!

Disney is using the same McNeely score in the trailer for their new film Snow Dogs.

I'm listening to this score right now. And while listening to track six and eight, I noticed that the first minute or so of both tracks sound very familiar. I know I heard it somewhere else but I can't remember from what! The first thing that pops in my mind is Murder in the First, becuase it has that same kind of vibe, but Iron Will was composed before Murder in the First (I think.), so I'm not really sure.
Does anyone know if the first thirty to sixty seconds of tracks six and eight are lifted from somewhere other than Joel McNeely's mind?

I love IRON WILL. It does have a lot of the Broughton's style, but it's so magical and spontaneous, that it drives you there, to the magical world of music.

    Well done McNeely!!

    TimT,

There is a part in the score that is very reminiscent of the "Desert Chase" cue from RAIDERS OF THE LOST ARK... but that's probably not the cue you're thinking of...

Iron Will is my favorite McNeely score -- and its similarity to Broughton is a big plus, I think. I actually saw a few minutes of the film on cable the other day, and was surprised to find Kevin Spacey in a leading role. Great rousing stuff!

Iron Will is an awful, insipid score. It's either Horner-grade copycatting, or maddeningly boring, or both. I guess I'm in the minority, because it almost put me to sleep on my first listen. Maybe you all need ear exams.

Now now, John..!! Although I [have to surprise everyone by] agreeing partly with Wedge that THE SCORE for IRON WILL is kinda boring, the score still has one of the most splendid main themes from Joel McNeely's pen. I am probably the biggest Broughton fan on these boards after Jeronimo and that's why I love most of the similar work by Joel McNeely and John Debney. This trio of composers get so much SINCERITY in their melodies that the result is warm enough to melt your heart away.
