This may have been discussed before, but I went searching and came up with no threads, so I'll pose the question now.If they really go ahead with seven Harry Potter films, and they really try to push out one per year, then there is a high chance John Williams will not be available to score a number of them. For many of us, this sounds tragic. To others, I have no doubt it sounds promising.
If such an event should take place, who would you nominate to step in and fill his shoes?
When the subject of scoring Harry Potter originally came up, my first choice was Danny Elfman*. But now that Williams has done the first movie, I think Elfman would be a wrong choice. The style would need to be kept as consistent as possible.
I therefore vote Bruce Broughton. I can think of no one better.
Some other composers could do a good job as well: Joel McNeely; perhaps Michael Giacchino or John Debney, or even Don Davis. But still, there'd be no one better suited to the job than Broughton.
Kirk
*After seeing the way it was finally visualized through Columbus, I now feel Elfman would not have been a wise choice. Under another director, perhaps. But under Columbus, Williams was the ideal composer.

I was thinking a little earlier how Jerry Goldsmith would handle a Potter film. I think Jerry would even be more suitable than John Williams for this territory.
But, I was thinking Williams is good, and Goldsmith is amazing, but another composer comes to mind...a composer whom I think would be the ideal choice for Potter...the ideal choice for The Two Towers....-Dylan

What about David Arnold for some of the later Potters?

My choice would be Elliot Goldenthal.
I think that his interpretation of this film will be unique.
(Since you all said -and i agree-that John Williams didn't compose anything too original for Harry Potter. In my opinion,Jerry Goldsmith wouldn't be such a wise decision for a "magical"film.)
K
P.S:For me,Elliot Goldenthal) is possibly the only serious composer out there...
Don't kill me for saying that.

I think that Bruce Broughton, JNH, and David Arnold would all produce wonderful scores. My personal vote is for Bruce. Though, and lets hope it doesn't happen, but don't you think James Horner might try to "hop on the bandwagon" just cause a Potter film is a cool thing to have on your resume?

Though I believe Wiliams was off target with Harry...I'd sooner see someone else take up the directorial reigns. Columbus should be directing tampon commercials.

I think that JW should do them. Although Silvestir perhaps, Debney maybe, MkNeily, or maybe JNH.Jz

Well, I'm absolutely perfectly happy with the first Potter score, so please let Williams do as many as possible (there are great opportunities for thematic development). But if he can't do some, it's easy: Bruce Broughton all the way!

While I think David Arnold, James Newton Howard, and Elliot Goldenthal all would have been interesting choices originally, I feel that some effort should be made to keep the style of the music consistent with what Williams has already established. For that reason I think Goldenthal especially would be a wrong choice, which is in no way a criticism of his abilities, mind you; I simply feel the style would clash too much with what Williams did.
Arnold and Howard are close enough that it wouldn't bother most people. And, of course, I wouldn't be unhappy about either of those choices, at all.

If, like SPQR suggests, they did hand the directorial duties to another individual (who had a unique take somewhat different than Columbus's) then I would be more open to the idea of hiring a new composer with a more unique style.
But Broughton would still be my top choice.

Kyriacos, I realize your obsession with Goldenthal, but get real...His music is far too complex for silly tripe like Harry Potter.

Well to tell you the truth,No i haven't heard Legend.
Perhaps you are right on this.
You are also very right in what you are stating in the 2nd paragraph.(different director possibilities)
Still though..i would like seeing Goldenthal trying on some "magical"related films later in his career..(Harry Potter films or not)K
