Everybody seems totally enthused (as they should be) right now about Debney's return to epic action/adventure mode in The Scorpion King. Bearing that in mind, I'm surprised to see very little discussion of Dragonfly, which looks like territory he's never been to before. Sure, he's done thrillers and horror movies, but this looks quite a bit different than any of those types of films he's explored before.

    See the trailer here:
    http://www.apple.com/trailers/universal/dragonfly.html

As for the movie itself, it looks like it might be another piece of Sixth-Sense-inspired mediocrity, but the trailer is good enough to give it the benefit of the doubt.

It's hard to say from a trailer, but it looks like it could be good.

Bollocks to this one, since I was hoping my hero Christopher Young would be scoring it

    S~

PS...finally caught the trailer for the Scorpion King, and was REALLY excited while they were using Poledouris' CONAN for the temp...then they switched to boring drums or something, and my interest faded.....then they introduced the 'villains'(HA!) and my interest left the building. Here's hoping that Debney will be able to cook this turkey!

I don't know James, I would bring up a single score: CUTTHROAT ISLAND... well, maybe two...SEAQUEST DSV. I think he'll do fine. I'm more worried about this spinoff movie. Aren't spinoffs restricted to just television?

What's next, "Jar Jar's World" in conjunction with the WB and MTV films?

The soaring music score for chorus and orchestra represents some of composer John Debney's most exciting work to date. Big themes, a stunning flying sequence, and a stirring and adventurous spirit make for an early film music highlight for the year.

Hmm... I wonder if this is just the normal Varese hype, which we've seen before, or is Debney coming out of his post Cutthroat Island crap-producing phase?

No that isn't normal hype from Varese, because usually after you read all the crap about the movie (about 2-3 paragraphs worth). They'll only say a one line sentence about the score (the product they're actually selling).

    Uh oh...from Intrada:

    JOHN DEBNEY
    Dragonfly Varese 66338 $16.99
(31:17) Ghost story with Kevin Costner gets impressively mounted score for orchestra, chorus. Subtle string effects, clusters, swelling chords evoke James Newton Howard. Sometimes eerie, sometimes compelling album hampered by brief playing time.

Oh come on Sean! Not every score NEEDS a 78-minute release..... Also, maybe Debney only wrote 35 minutes of score, and this is the best of what he had to offer?

Im not complaining! I probably would never hear this...I was just opening the door for everyone else to gripe at Varese
    Someone had to do it!

Besides, Doug started it....he said the album was hampered by a brief running time anyway

It just seemed that the days of the 30min release were over. Personally, I could care less, I have no time for any of this stuff
I just like to read everyone else's complaints.....

I picked up the CD and I wasen't impressed. The Main Title comes off as a good opener but goes downhill after that, IMO.

And it is an excllent score!
Although I missed the first half hour of the movie I really liked the music I heard. It is very James Newton Howard like in sound (Sixth Sense, Unbreakable) But highly effective. The CD release is very short. 31 minutes spread into 7 tracks. The problem the lenghth creates is that it does not give the listener a satisfying cohesive listening experience. And by that I mean you can't listen to the CD and re live the movie nor form any other images in your mind while listen to the CD as a whole. Because every track just about has its own vibe. For example track 1 "Main Title" is a driving percussion based choral cue, which is very exciting and a good way to start the CD. But it is the only track in this style. The rest of the tracks are totally different in sound mainly more lower key.
The same situation for the next 2 tracks. Each one is completly different from the other. One is a soft reflective piece with use of the subtle mainn theme and the next a suspene/action builder. This is really bad because this doesn't let you get into the score as a whole, the music is always changing. You'll either like this aspect of it or another, but probably not the whole thing.
The last 3 tracks are the ones that I enjoy the most, because its only towards the end that it seems the score really begins to take some sort of form. The reason is because these cues are almost back to back in the movie so there isn't much variation to get lost in.

In the end though every indivisual track is really good, theres nothing wrong with Debney's cues, besides the Newton Howard influences, and I'd give it a solid 4-STAR rating. The main problem is the presentation.
We are given only a little peak at Debney's expanded thoughts and ideas in the score CD. Which unfortunetly doesn't make a good engaging listening experience, its rather chopy and blantly obivous that it isn't complete.

After playing around with the score for a while I've discovered a CD programming sequence that might make the score sound more enjoyable. I tried to make the chopiness not as noticable by trying to make it seem like there is some meat to the score's CD release. It works out pretty good I think, much better than what Varese provided.
Here's what I came up with.
    program your tracks as followed.
    5, 2, 3, 6, 1, 7 Yes track 4 is gone, it has sacrificed itself, it's quantity for quality.
And let me know what you think. And post your suggestions as well. We just may stumble on to something.

The film blew, plain and simple.

But John Debney still rose to the occasion and composed a JNH-inspired score that, in my opinion, out-does The Sixth Sense. A simple descending motif representing the sad Costner character provides a surprisingly strong backbone for the score. It is toyed around with a bit by strings, some choir and woodwinds now and then, but it all comes together at the end.

An uplifting full orchestra/choir finale underscores an utterly ridiculous end to the film. Debney fans should check it out for this.
