I was watching the "Connery" profile on Channel 5 yesterday and it seemed to me that Connery almost looked back at his James Bond character with disdain, a bit like Christopher Lee and Dracula. It occurred to me whether or not famous film characters like these who have become legendary and associated with Classic music ever appreciated just how the music supported and strengthened their on-screen persona to the point where they have met or become friends with a particular composer. It would be interesting to hear any stories that you know. I mean we all know that cast members usually turn up during the "Star Wars" sessions, but I dont really mean that. More to do with an actor/composer relationship being appreciated and acknowledged through a mutual respect over the years. I'm sure there are several tributes by actor's to respective composers on some soundtrack CD sleeves. One I can think about is Chuck Heston's tribute to Jerry Goldsmith regarding "The Planet of the Apes" Music"
I just noticed now, actually, that on the Project: (Total Stereo Sound) LP of the score it says about Heston's incomplete written comments ("...continued inside this double fold jacket") Unfortunately, its only a single sleeve record so someone really gaffed on that one

Anyway, tell us about any you can think of. Dont include Spielberg tributes to Williams, or tributes by Director's as these are pretty commonplace.

Perhaps I'm being a bit presumptuous, but I think Jeffrey Combs and Richard Band became, if not friends, then mutually respected frequent co-workers. Combs added a little note about Band's music in the Doctor Mordrid / Demonic Toys liner notes, and I know he's spoken well of Band's music in at least one interview.

The only other one I can think of comes from Goldsmith's Detroit concert in 2000. Jerry at one point (probably before The Russia House, but I'm not certain) said of his relationships with actors, "There's still one star who, every time we run into each other, says, 'Hello, Jerry.' And that's Sean Connery." And, of course, we all know the Medicine Man story...

LOL! I thought it was common knowledge around here.

Others have told slightly different versions, but I'll convey it as closely as I can remember Jerry himself did at the concert...

After finishing The Russia House, Jerry attended one of those (post-premiere?) parties for the cast and crew. At one point he approached Connery to compliment him on his performance, and Connery responded with a double-take, exclaiming, "I want your hair!"

The next movie they worked together on was Medicine Man, in which Connery got Jerry's hair. Goldsmith is even credited as a hair designer on the film.

The obvious one is John Barry and Michael Caine (please...don't say you don't know this and want me to tell the story ), Caine is a friend of Connery's, so I can't imagine that Barry hasn't met him?!

George Lazenby went to the scoring session of OHMSS (another story...ask someone else ), it would be hard to imagine that Connery didn't go to a single Bond scoring session?!

Compared with every other living film composer Barry's life and career seem very colourful, I suggest you check the Bio's by either Geoff Leonard or Eddi Fiegal

Agreed, but I still have to mention this: I love how Kenneth Branagh repeatedly refers to Patrick Doyle as "the famous Patrick Doyle" on his commentary track on the Dead Again DVD.

Miklos Rozsa and Sabu actually got to be great friends. Rozsa's autobiography, "Double Life," contains many fond reminiscinces of the child star of THE THIEF OF BAGDAD and THE JUNGLE BOOK.

    Hi everyone,

This long time lurker (and very rare poster!) thought he'd add something on this topic. I'll start by explaining the whole Connery/Barry thing.

    *Sean Connery/Barry*
I've read (on http://www.egroups.com/messages/johnbarry and a few other places) that on some occasions, Barry, Connery, and the whole crew would stay together in the same hotel when shooting occurred in other countries, so yes, I assume Barry and Connery knew each other well. If Barry ever has another concert, it would be nice to have Connery introduce the concert (and even better if I can make it to the concert!)

    *George Lazenby/Barry*
Geoff Leonard's book JOHN BARRY: A LIFE IN MUSIC states that Barry did not get along very well with Lazenby- I think the implication by Barry is that he thinks Lazenby is an idiot when it comes to commenting on the role of music in film.

    *Michael Caine/Barry*
At one of Barry's RAH concerts, Caine introduced the concert. He first explained that when he was evicted from his appartment, he went to see if he could find a place to stay for the night. So, where did he go? John Barry's house. The very first night he was there, he was kept awake by music.... the music of GOLDFINGER was being created that very night! Barry is also good friends with Terrence Stamp and George Martin.

In addition, if you check out Leonard's book- which is now out-of-print I believe- you can find pictures of Barry with: Christopher Lee, Louis Armstrong, Nancy Sinatra, Basil Poledouris, some dude from ORBITAL, the Queen (although I'm not sure if he's friends with *her*!), Brian Forbes, and the list is endless....

Hope that was helpful. For more Barry goss, humour, and discussion, check out http://www.egroups.com/messages/johnbarry -- a lot of Barry insiders post here, so if any news comes around, then you'll be the first to know!!

    Best,

    Alain

I've been lurking at the Barry site for a couple of years now, a cool site which is always first with accurate information.

Don Black turned up in Dictionary Dell on Channel 4's word game COUNTDOWN this week. As a tribute to Barry's regular lyricist, part of the audience ended the programme by singing Born Free.

Black looked on with a strange mixture of embarrassment and incredulity.

By the way, Sean Connery is going to be in the next James Bond movie, so his disdain can't be all that much anymore. I know for a while Connery didn't want to have anything to do with Bond whatsoever, but AFAIK he already got over that in the 1980s (and starred in Never Say Never.

To stay on topic: one of the most obvious examples of a close actor/composer relationship is obviously the one between James Dean and Leonard Rosenman.

And Clint Eastwood's has also always spoken in the best words of Lalo Schifrin, Jerry Fielding, and Lenny Niehaus.

I shudder to think of just how close the relationship between Dean and Rosenman was.

While this has to do neither with "classic" actors nor a relationship that lasted "through the years," I thought it would be relevant enough to point out that Renee Zellweger and Harry Gregson-Williams actually dated for a while after The Whole Wide World.

James--since it's the composer that usually gets forked in Hollywood, it's nice to know that the tables get turned now and again. Which reminds me, James Newton Howard dated Barbra Striesand for a while too.

It's a certainty that Connery has met Barry. Barry flew to Istanbul with the cast and crew on FRWL and also attended location filming in Nassau on Thunderball. I'Apparently, Connery personally asked Barry to score 'Never Say Never Again' but Barry stayed loyal to Eon and scored 'Octopussy' instead. I'm sure thaey must have met on many more occasions.
