Brian, I strongly suggest "Big." There's three pretty nice themes in that score...there's a love theme, another theme which I think kind of represents being a kid (it's played in the film when our main character Josh is with his friend, playing baseball, etc.) and (my favorite theme in the score, and my favorite of all of Shore's themes I've heard) an awesome gypsy-like theme. Nice score.

I have most of the scores on JJH's list, and the ones I think would go down best as first listen (at least they did for me), are:Ed Wood
The Fly
Philadelphia
Big (great!)The rest are all very good, but some get very weird (like the Cell).
He also scored some film about some ring thingy which doesn't seem too bad.

I don't see much mention of M BUTTERFLY.....that's a really beautiful album, Peking Opera cues notwithstanding, and has some gorgeous 'fantasy' string and wind writing by Shore.Think of it as 'Silence of the Lambs goes on holiday in the sunny countryside'.

Currently playing NAKED LUNCH, which is very difficult, at least to me. According to the liner notes by Ornette Coleman: "...is written without any sequence, order, key or strict tempo."

Is Naked Lunch good? What's it like? It's next on my Shore list.....I admit to having never heard of this Coleman guy, and wasn't sure whether to take all the positive reviews over at Amazon as a good or bad sign.
Is this a CD that scorelovers will like? Or is it a Coleman album?

See, Brian? That's your problem. Nell is by Mark Isham... and is also in the used store.Could it be the moviemusic.com website is so "udderly" confusing to use?

Naked Lunch is fun. That's realyl all you can say about it. Non-traditional, improvisational, goofy.
Shore does evoke some sounds that are qutie intruiging.don't expect Lord of the Rings or The Yards.

okay, I just picked up a score of his from 2000 that went unnoticed (except by me of course):
Esther Kahn, which I purchased through Screen Archives.
Shore continues to amaze me by the sheer bravado of his work. Uncompromising at times. This, like all of Shore's work, is great music making.
I haven't the faintest idea about what the film's about, but Shore's chamber-like score speaks volumes on it's own.
It's what I imagine his true concert music sounds like.Shore's not at all like any other mainstream film composer. NONE, and I mean NONE of his scores sound alike from one project to the next.
(if you only like, or rather appreciate, big orchestral music, then this is not for you, but rather for those with a wider musical pallette)posted 01-10-2002 06:50 PM PT (US) Old Infopop Software by UBB
