Don't worry - this is NOT another post from me where I complain about things.

I was just wondering, if any of you Williams-fans out there did have similar troubles as I did when STARTING the relationship with John Williams' music.
Because there's really A LOT John Williamseses out there !!!

I can totally admit, that I was initially fooled to believe that the composer John Williams was also a GUITARIST, and even a film actor. Plus, later I've noticed there's even a film producer and a chorus conductor by the same name, and certainly there's about a million other John Williamseses.

    So, just curious -
have any of you had troubles finding which one is the AUTHENTIC ?

    KEN

Well I once listened to a ten minute long guitar concerto on the radio beliveing it to be a piece wiritten by JW and not performed by him.

Also digging through old tapes on in our living room I stumble across a copy of The Best of JOHN WILLIAMS! The guy on the front cover really didn't look like the JW I had seen before, but anyway I soon found out later that there were more than one John Williams. Duh.

I've had to think thrice about telling the guitarist and the film composer apart since I've seen both their work in classical sections of CD stores. But then I remembered what the film composer looked like at the Oscars and realised the guitarist was different.

John Williams the classical guitarist is as famous as John Williams the film composer.

Speaking of the guitarist, I highly recommend a CD on Sony Classical that contains 2 guitar concertos on it: one by Richard Harvey (a film score composer) and Steve Gray. The Harvey concerto is exciting, and buirsting with melody and thematic material. Compositionally it is very traditional and nothing groundbreaking,, but enjoyable nevertheless.

And John Williams the guitarist plays on the score of A Fish Called Wanda.

Ken, I got fooled early in the collecting game thinking that the guitarist was the filmscore composer and have a couple of his CDs (of which are REALLY good!) then I finally found out what "our" John looked like and realized what my error was. At least the guitarist is talented, so I don't feel to bad about my ignorance.

Maybe John Williams(Composer) should use John Williams(Guitarist) as a soloist on one of his new scores...how confusing!

I've got an official release of "Images", by John Williams. But it's not the much loved non-existent score by our Johnny for the Altman film. It's by the guitar John Williams. But it's still called "Images".

It was a present. Somebody had heard me raving about how I'd love to see a release of this score. Wrong Johnny, wrong Images, as it turned out.

There's a radio personality on WGN here in Chicago. He used to review movies on Sunday morning, and the weekend The Phantom Menace came out he opened the program with the first 15 seconds of "Duel of the Fates," then the announcer came on: "The John Williams show..." It was a nice in-joke. Learn about him right here. And thanks to another page of his web site, I also know Roseanne's third ex-husband has a step-brother named John Williams: click on the news clipping just below the map of the USA.

    I recall seeing an album
of "John Williams PLAYING John Williams"
    - the guitarist performing the composer's work,
    maybe on Sony Classical..?

...Or have I only dreamt it ??

    ******

    Hey Graham,
that wasn't funny story at all and yet I laughed - your luck on that one reminds so much of my usual luck on anything.
...Furthermore, the story reminds me of some youngsters who rented THE MASK, waiting to see the Jim Carrey extravaganza, but saw only repulsive sexual things on this film by the same name
    - actually, there are hundreds of similar cases,
BUT I have to say that Graham's story version tops it all !!

    ******

By the way, I have only one album by the guitarist John Williams -
CAVATINA, "Music from the movie Deerhunter", and with big letters JOHN WILLIAMS
    - and when I bought it some 13 years ago, I didn't like it - AND, I WAS SHOCKED INDEED by such an album from the Maestro of ET, RAIDERS, and stuff like that (like I thought it to be) -
and I still don't like that album.

All the guys named John Williams do it purposely to confuse the beginners in film music.

    Says the one, authentic
