Just an interesting observation i've made while listening to "The Land Before Time"by Horner(maybe some of you came up with this before i did but nevertheless, here it goes):

If you combine the first three tracks with the last one,the whole piece works very well as a 4-part,40 minute symphony!
It doesn't get boring, even though ALL four tracks feature the main themes.

Of course it works. It is cloned from Prokofiev's PETER AND THE WOLF...

I knew you would answer Andre.
I know that Horner has copied a lot from the Classical composers.Still, that doesn't mean that the soundtrack isn't an enjoyable experience.
C'mon now...don't tell me that the "supergenious"composer John Williams is TOTALLY original???...

I agree Kyriacos, LBTime is a great score, and is structured symphonically. Just skip that damned song!

Another that jumps to mind is The Empire Strikes Back....look at it as a grand symphony! Opening Mvmt., Scherzo, Adagio, Finale

    Best,
    Sean

Excellent! The Empire Strikes back is my most favourite of all the Star Wars scores.I think it's the most lyrical one(i especially adore the love theme)
    Thanks

Despite Horner having ripped quite a few classical works for this score (the opening is nearly 100 percent idential to the opening of Bartok's ballet "The Wooden Prince") I still enjoy "The Land Before Time" a lot. One of Horner's better efforts, if you ask me.

Yeah, Empire and LBT are two scores that I prefer to listen to as symphonic works, as opposed to a succession of cues

And that Alien 3 finale is heartbreaking! I can't listen to it that often, it's so devastating!

As for the rips in Horner's works...either it drives you nuts, or you don't care...I can listen to Star Trek 3 and Prokofiev's Romeo & Juliet equally as happy

    Best,
    Sean

You haven't seen the film!?!? Why are you playing the CD then! lol kidding

It is very odd...somedays I like it, others I think it's totally botched....you should watch it, and just take it on it's own terms, not as an 'Alien sequel'. Besides, it's nice to see how the score works with the film, not to mention all the missing music from the cd

The ending works well enough IMO....if not the crux of the scene, the 'coda'. What I mean is the very last few shots of the film, ending on that light trumpet and string motif...very cold and sad, but well done. If Fincher had been allowed to make the movie he had conceived, it would have been fine...damned Fox execs
Did you know, for those who've seen the film, that the 'Explosion and Aftermath' scene was originally the end of the film!!! Re-edit nightmare, hello!!!

    Best,
    Sean

The bad news is that i already know the ending....DAMN those reviews...
"...and especially the ending,Ripley's death scene, where she sacrifices herself because she eventually discovers that SHE has an Alien inside her..."bla bla bla...
    It Sucks!
Anyway,i still want to watch the movie;at least i'll get to say that i have watched all four Alien films.

Hey - it's Fincher! #1 and #3 are the best Alien movies. Though I'd still like to see them release Fincher's original cut.

Speaking of Horner stealing from classical composers, I was watching 2001: a space odyssey yesterday, and about half way through when we reach The Jupiter Mission part of the film, there's a piece in the film (I'm sure it's one of the Ligetti pieces, though I don't know which one exactly) that is really quite beautiful. Unfortunately it sounds as though Horner was listening to this piece when writing the opening titles to Aliens because they are too similar for it to be a mere coincidence.

I am too tired right now to search my CD collection to correct Richard about the true composer Horner cloned his Main Theme from ALIENS (which was the same he used early on PROJECT X and later on PATRIOT GAMES and so many others I can't remember now)...

    Someone, help here please.

    Aram Khachaturian. The Gayane ballet.

And I confess a deep love for The Land Before time despite learning of the classical lifts. I used to watch the movie constantly as a child (a rather short time ago, really) and the music is forever etched in my heart.

    Isn't that nice?

#2 is a great action film, but I found that #1 and #3 hold up much better for repeated viewings.

Re the Gayaneh piece: A couple of years ago, that theme appeared in my head, and it took me several days to find out where I had heard it: "Aliens" I thought, but then, some time later, I watched 2001 and thought I must have been wrong...

Oh well, I'm not that angry about that particular steal now that I've heard the Deluxe Edition of the score. Of course, it still appears there (even more frequently), but Horner also did a lot of variations on the theme. I think in the film it only pops up in the 1:1 "stolen version". The Khan and Star Wars bits trouble me much more, particularly since the rest of the score is really great.
