Marian, I have a concert-band version (I forget the label ... it's Canadian) that's tremendously good! I'm not sure if I'll prefer the orchestra version or not! Only one thing is certain: I'll be buying both!

Since the worst stress at the university and job is over (or at least I hope so), I treated myself to a couple of new CDs:- Anton Bruckner: 9 Symphonies (Berlin Philharmonic, Herbert von Karajan)
- Anton Bruckner: Complete Symphonies (including symphonies 00, 0 and the original finale of the 4th; Royal Scottish National Orchestra, National Symphony Orchestra of Ireland, New Zealand Symphony Orchestra, Georg Tintner)
$70 for 20 CDs is a good price, I think.

Browsing in a pretty bad shop, I found, amongst multiple song compilations: RAMBO 2 (Jerry G), the Silva expanded one, and at half price! Also got cheap: THE TEN COMMANDMENTS (Elmer B). A question: was the LP a double? I can't remember, but if so I imagine that the CD is missing some tracks, as it only runs an hour...

That's most likely the ATMA release... got it two days ago
and it's superior in every aspect to the one I mentioned earlier in this thread. Performed by the Ensemble vent et percussion de Quebec under the baton of René Joly. It also contains 'Spartacus, a symphonic tone poem', composed by Jan van der Roost. A disc worth having!
TIMMEEEEEEERIO! Watch out for next weeks look at another LOTR Symphony No. 1 release: THE FULL MONTY THEN!

Got today from Thailand (where a good friend of mine lives):SURYOTHAI, Richard Harvey (the score to the most expensive thai production to date... according to my friend. Richard Harvey recorded the score with the Budapest Film Orchestra and an ensemble with original thai instruments, adding the appropriate color. The movie seems to be an historic epic)
BANG RA JAN, Karabau (a very popular thai band. I hope I spelled the names correct...)
JAN DARA, Tschantschein Pongprapapand (THAT's a name huh?) an erotic/romantic Lovestory, the music - reminds me sometimes of Sakamoto - is spheric stuff with some thai percussion, very nice easy listening
Does anyone else know one of those?

Mark, I imagine that the available versions of THE TEN COMMANDMENTS are indeed re-recordings. What I was wondering was if the 1989 MCA CD release is the same as the old LP. I've got the LP back in Scotland and haven't seen it for a while, but I think it was a double (or did it just have a fold-out sleeve?). As I said before, if it was a double, the CD could be an edited version of that, as it only runs an hour. Or maybe my brain's just scrambled.LRob, what's COMANCHE like? I remember Herschel Burke Gilbert's stark, abrasive main titles for things like RIOT IN CELL BLOCK ELEVEN and WHILE THE CITY SLEEPS. I also recall his much softer score for SAM WHISKEY, but I don't think he's got much out. A great composer.

Marian, sounds like your TAXI DRIVER is the old one, the same as the original LP. The expanded one has new Herrmann tracks plus the jazzy re-recorded versions by Dave Blume. I know what you mean about too much Herrmann, but this should be one to get. Although I haven't got it.Nobody going to answer my questions about THE TEN COMMANDMENTS and COMANCHE? Scroll up (that's not an insult)!

Well, my album has 5 tracks arranged and conducted by Dave Blume (nice, but not really original Herrmann), one Theme from "Taxi Driver", which is Herrmann's music with (incredibly hissy) Robert De Niro dialogue. Only the four remaining tracks (about 10 minutes) are "normal" score. I have to say I'm pretty disappointed. Only ten minutes of this great score...NP: Walking With Beasts (Benjamin Bartlett)

Mmmm, that sounds like it actually could be the first release, Marian. Mind you, I thought it had marginally more Herrmann than that. It took up one side on the old LP.
