I've decided to come out of my selfimpposed exile to offer a few thoughts about this film. I went to the midnight showing and it is right now 3:30 am and I have to be at work at 8:00 am so I will cut this short.Having just re-read the Hobbit and the first part of the book and stopped at the BREAKING OF THE FELLOWSHIP I can only say what a downright masterpiece this movie turned out to be. I am a huge John Williams fan, but Shore defenetlly deserves every award imaginable for this. In fact, this movie better receive as many if not more Academy Awards as that stupid Titanic thing. I have never and I mean...never...seen a book thus well translated to the screen. Having just read the story I and every person in the sold out theater was glued to the screen. Three hours went by as a bare few minutes, despite the late time of the day or early time of the morning if you so will. The acting, directing...oh so much more. All my expectations were met and even surpassed. So full of doubt I was, and all has been proved futile, for this film certainly will take its place among the greatest of the great movies ever made. It was a throw back to the old Hollywood spectacles: Grand, well scripted, incredibly acted, music that enhances and supports, awesome designs and special effects that were great but only served to tell the story. My heart is on fire with the emotions that this film spurred in me. Emotions of adventure, love, romance, despair, danger and so much more. Tears swelled up deep inside of me at the end of the movie.
It is late, I shall end here. I have returned this time to tell all of you who I so dearly love, respect and miss that no onther movie has both taken me by surprise and so richly satisfied me as this one. It reminded me of the kind of fellowship this board has with the one goal: the love of film music. See this movie. Experince what it means to love a story so much that one will take great devotion and skill in telling it. Whether you have ever read the book or not, whether you will ever read this tale or not, [b]The Lord of the Rings is thus far The Lord of the Films[/b}.
As I return to my exile, I will as always peek in here and there and will always treasure the people who are members here.
Gosh, love this film people. Tell everyone about it. Go back to the person of imagination, love and adventure. This is truly a gift Hollywood needed to give us in a long time, and that around Christmas time. Merry Christmas to us all.

Congrats Foobsie! Now about LOTR, I am in hot anticipation to see this and have been for over a year. However this feeling of urgency has increased recently after seeing "The making of" hour-long special on the Sci-Fi Channel (as well as the many trailers out there). Tolkien's books have been huge in Russia even before the fall of the Soviet control, so I first read the books as a child and have been in love with fantasy every since then.
Unfortunately, with two babies it is very hard to find the time to make it to the movies, so I doubt if I'll make it this week, but I have high hopes! Most of you out there will probably see it long before I, so...Merry Christmas and enjoy that movie!!!--Gala

I just came back too (well, a short while ago). I saw the first local screening, which was at 2pm local time (GMT +1)I must say I loved every minute of it. From the Balrog to the Shire to the Hobbits to Gollum to the ending to the Nazgul, this is filmamking at it's best.
The music worked beautifully, and the casting, as has been said endless times, is spot on. Every single person in the movie is utterly convincing. The effects are very good, especially the size of the hobbits.
I loved it. Loved it a lot. Can't wait to see The Two Towers, but in the meantime am happy at having seen a film which scored in all aspects. Great stuff.

Ok, everyone hold on a second.
I saw the film last night and I thought it was good but not the best ever.
I didn't like the way Peter Jackson filmed the fight scenes. You couldn't tell exactly what was going on. It was just a blurr of swords, arms, and heads flying off.
I thought Ian McKellen was good but the rest of the cast was only ok. (Ian Holms was also very good)
The look of the film was superb (I'm talking cinematography here) but the CGI effects were really sub-standard (but then again, I hate CGI effects in any movie). I didn't think the whole shrinking thing of the hobbits worked at all.
However, the score was magnificent. I heard a lot of influences of James Horner (especially Titanic, uillean pipes anyone? and the voiceless choruses). But a career-defining moment for Shore. I have to admit that it is the best score of the year so far and by far the best thing that Shore has ever done. The Mines of Moria scene was especially good as was the whole of the last hour of music.
A good movie with a great score.

Sorry you didn't enjoy it MattStar, but I wanted let you know that Horner did not invent the use of pipes and wordless choir in film scores. And there are no uillean pipes in LOTR. And Shore uses the wordless choir in ways Horner has never even imagined, it's so much more potent.

The expectations for THE LORD OF THE RINGS were high, and they've been met. Wow! My compliment to Peter Jackson & Co. The movie was absolutely faithful to the novel without falling into the trap of being slavishly literal and therefore ultimately unispired. No, they got it right. Right down to some charming details (which reader of the book wouldn't have a smile on his face when Bilbo Baggins held up his just finished copy of THERE AND BACK AGAIN?). Excellently cast movie, too. A mature fantasy movie, totally convincing all the way. One would of course expect state of the art special effects, but they were never self serving here but wonderfully integrated into the story. Of course, one has to accept that this is ONE director's vision of the movie, but I thought he did very good. Hobbingon looked exactly 100% the way Hobbingon should look, the Orcs were so wonderfully vile and hideous, and Gollum was probably played by himself: you almost expect the end credits to state that this movie has been shot on location in Middle Earth and that thanks goes to the people of Bree, Hobbingon, and Lothlorian, for making this movie possible. Thumbs up, way up![Message edited by Nicolai P. Zwar on 12-22-2001]

I saw the movie, and I don't think it's a masterpiece... It was certainly good, but I had too many problems with it; keep in mind I haven't read the book.I'm going to see it again, because I've talked to a lot of people who had the pretty much EXACT response as I did (mainly problems w/the 2nd hour)... It was also a LOT of movie to take in one sitting, and the fact that I didn't get nearly as much sleep as usual the night before couldn't have helped.
Still, I'm a bit angry that it's #1 on IMDB, because it certainly shouldn't be at that position, and another viewing won't ever change my opinion on that.

So don't worry, by the time it's been out on video for a few weeks it'll be bumped down to #4.

OK...so I saw the film three times in four days...don't laugh!!! Even after nine hours I still want more!Too bad I don't have any more friends or relatives that I can drag to the movie just so that I can partake of the magic again. It's hard to say the movie is the best ever--it certainly has its flaws, but it weaves such a spell that those flaws seem to melt away. I feel the film deserves Best Picture this year, if for nothing more than the heart that went into making it and the magic that comes across on screen!!
Damn...12 more months...

I've never been able to pick my top five favorite movies, much less a single favorite, so I certainly can't claim to be able to distinguish the single best film ever from the rest of the truly great films. That said, though, LoTR:FoTR is certainly a great film, and it easily makes my list of favorite films. One of the most remarkable things to me about it is that it makes the powerful moments from the book truly moving.
***spoiler blah blah blah***
Boromir's death brought a lump to my throat, and Sam splashing into the water brought tears to my eyes, which is fairly astonishing considering I've read the books several times and knew what was coming.Anyway, that's enough gushing for now. Happy Holidays, everyone.

I saw the film yesterday and I was stunned. This was truly the most powerful cinematic experience in my life. The film went on like a rollercoaster ride! Especially the battle sequences were a knockout.
However I agree with lars - This is an extremely well made film but not a masterpiece although it does come quite close. It's a pity that the soundtrack is missing so many great cues.Regards, Juha.

Just saw this movie today. On the whole I liked it a lot in places and not so much in others. It was 3hrs long and it felt like 3hrs to me.
Anyway, my P.O.V is that while not a masterpiece, it made for very good entertainment.

Richard...Titanic, Saving Pvt.Ryan, Thin Red Line, even Braveheart feel like 3-hour movies. LOTR feels more like 2.5...after seeing in three times, regardless of how long it is or seemed, the fact that I was ready to sit through the next 3 hours speaks measures about the film. Most reviewers have noted the excellent pacing of the film...I for once am forced to agree.
