Sure, there have been a few threads on this film before, but after watching the DVD again today, I must start a new thread...For those of you who haven't seen this masterpiece, go out and BUY it immediately. No need to rent, for you'll just be wasting $4.
The film really is a classic, and personally my favorite animated film ever. The animation is superb (simple, but flawless), Kamen's score is a work of genius (though it doesn't fare as well outside of the film), and the dialogue and acting are perfect.
For me, this film disproves the "word of mouth" theory. I don't understand how something like The Others can gain so much simply off word of mouth, where as The Iron Giant, despite it getting critical praise, barely earned a dime. I guess you need a huge twist at the end

Anyway, the only purpose for this thread is to get people who STILL haven't seen it (there are many, though I've managed to get a dozen or so friends to watch it - they all loved it). Really, see it.

Saw it a few months ago. Don't see what's so special about it.

Sadly there are times if an animated film doesn't have Walt Disney in front of it it is ignored. I think we beginning to see a shift though, but some great animated films like IRON GIANT still suffer.

If you're thinking of buying Iron Giant, you might want to wait a while. From what I've heard, there's a 2-disc special edition coming out sometime in 2002. That would DEFINITELY be worth the wait, and it's what I'm waiting on. Great film, great score, easily one of Kamen's best.Mike

There's only 1 thing I disagree with Hasta about - I personally think the score works fine without the film. Great stuff all roundNP - LOTR (Shore) [finally] 10/10

Agreeing with Hasta completely -
THE IRON GIANT is simply WONDERFUL !!I think the movie suffered from the same thing as MOULIN ROUGE
- stupid marketing and advertising; the trailers gave the completely wrong impression about the movie. I really wasn't expecting anything so emotional and witty as what THE IRON GIANT turned out to be.I highly recommend it
(- knowing that most you active guys here don't have the same bizarre taste as I do, I think this post doesn't make any difference).

Glad to hear that! I fell in love with the film upon my first viewing, and it's strong character traits and morals that it portrays. It's just a great film IMO.

I have been meaning to get a copy, and actually did twice. The problem is, the original DVD release sucks. I don't know how you all feel about snapper cases, but in my case I hated these things. Anything that is made of mostly cardboard gets my vote for crap packaging.
Funny enough, the first two DVD' that I had come in with them, The Matrix and The Wedding Singer weren't that bad. That said, upon the delivery of The Iron Giant, I changed my opinion back. Whoever packaged this thing did a bad job, since the inserts included sit right on top of the disc. This normally isn't even an issue, but being a dual sided disc, it causes damage to occur before the package is even opened. What's worse, it's always the widescreen presentation that is damaged.

Oh well, I look forward to a better release.
