With this release of OMEN II I have no regarded VARESE SARABANDE the best record label out there! In the past months we've gotten scores from them that once only heard in our dreams, like:
HEARTBEEPS
PROJECT X
OMEN
FINAL CONFLICT DELUX
DAMIEN DELUX
ALIENS DELUX
and the list goes on...Well, Damien is fantastic- and now we have all 3 scores complete and in perfect sound! The electronics are so pronounced and very cool. Nothing gets my blood pumping like his Runaway Train cue... Though upon listening to the actualy film cues, certain cues do sound better on the original album, like All The Power, it is such a treat to have both versions on one album! A+ on this Varese!

Although not a cool as the releases mentioned above, here are three up coming releases from Varese Sarabande Records courtesy of their web site.---------------------------------------------
THE AFFAIR OF THE NECKLACE
Original Motion Picture SoundtrackMusic Composed by David Newman
The Affair of the Necklace is a romantic drama based on the controversial true story of Jeanne De La Motte Valois, a countess whose title was stripped from her by the Royal Family during the late 18th Century. The story of her fight to restore her name and proper place in society is filled with mystery, intrigue and desire, with an infamous diamond necklace at the center of it all.
The Affair of the Necklace stars Hilary Swank, Simon Baker, Adrien Brody, Jonathan Pryce and Christopher Walken and was directed by Charles Shyer (Father of The Bride).
David Newman has composed a lavish and gorgeous period score in the classic tradition of The Age of Innocence. Scored for orchestra and chorus, it is one of the composer's finest work. It's romantic and grand and makes for one of the most captivating soundtracks of the year.
Warner Bros. will open The Affair of The Necklace in limited release on November 30, for Academy consideration before going wide in January.

I AM SAM
Original Motion Picture ScoreMusic Composed by John Powell
sean PENN michelle PFEIFFER
I AM SAM is the funny and poignant story of the price a father must pay to ensure his daughter's happiness.
The story begins in a city hospital with the birth of a baby girl. Rejected by her mother, the newborn is sent home with the father, Sam. Sam,diagnosed as mildly retarded and autistic, works for eight dollars an hour at a local coffee shop. Sam’s emotional life flourishes and his little daughter is the center of his universe. Along with a colorful group of friends, Sam is left to care for the baby alone. When Sam finally realizes that Lucy, by age 7, needs a mother, he sets out to find he one.
I AM SAM is a powerful and touching story of one father’s devotion to his daughter. The film is the center of Oscar talk with Penn and Pfeiffer as well as Laura Dern receiving a lot of attention.
The captivating score for i am sam is from one of today’s busiest and most talented composers, John Powell. It's moving and beautiful music which takes a highly original approach to the material.
New Line's film i am sam opens nationwide on December 28 at over 2000 theaters.

IN THE BEDROOM
Original Motion Picture SoundtrackMusic Composed by Thomas Newman
WINNER of the 2001 Sundance Film Festival Special Jury Prize for acting, awarded to SISSY SPACEK and TOM WILKINSON.
Matt Fowler (Wilkinson), a doctor practicing in his native Maine, is married to New Yorker Ruth Fowler (Spacek), a choral music teacher. Their lives are simple until their only child, Frank (Nick Stahl), comes home from college for the summer to earn money for graduate school in the fall. Frank becomes the subject of the small town's gossip because of his involvement and love affair with a single mother, Natalie (Marisa Tomei). In the midst of Maine's beautiful but fleeting summer, these characters find themselves deeply entrenched in unimaginable tragedy.
The brilliantly dark score by acclaimed composer Thomas Newman captures the elusive heart of the film, treading lightly while making a powerful impact. Newman’s genius of probing the darker side of life in such films as American Beauty proved invaluable to this highly original motion picture.
Miramax will open In The Bedroom for Academy consideration on November 23, before going wide in January.

I love how Varese makes a handful of "Deluxe" releases and everybody forgets about all those 30minute ones they have given us over the years.

I sometimes can't believe all the bitching I hear from you, Jonathan. Do you even have time to listen to film music with all the bitching? You know why Varese has not been able to release longer albums in the past. They're trying to improve that situation now. You should be grateful that some of those albums even came out at all. Bitch, bitch, bitch...

The Omen is nowhere complete, except for an isolated score on an old laserdisc. That's the only criticism I have of the Omen Deluxe Editions.
Otherwise, very nice job indeed!

Here is what you said...
"I love how Varese makes a handful of Deluxe" releases and everybody forgets about all those 30minute ones they have given us over the years."
This is not just a statement of the facts. This is you bitching about Varese and the length of their albums. Everyone here knows why those albums were at that length. It wasn't done intentionally. It's simple economics. We know this. You know this. What does it accomplish to bitch about it? How about this... Start a new thread entitled "Jonathan Bitches...". That way, I don't have to read a thread about Damien Omen II: Deluxe Edition and find your complaining.
I would like to apologize to everyone for this outburst, including you, Jonathan. I love this place too much to see it become anything like the film music newsgroup or Filmus. But there are a couple of people on this board who seem to do nothing but complain about soundtrack albums. I don't want to read about that... A certain amount of bitching is to be expected but does it have to be all the time?posted 12-04-2001 05:53 PM PT (US)

John FI've always loved the film version of the main title, particularly because the electronics were so pronounced. Now, when I think of the opening sequence and this music, I think of Harvey Bernhard's commentary on the dvd where he relates that Leo McKern was driving so fast that he practically fell out of the jeep. It's great to finally have this...

You should be grateful that some of those albums even came out at all.Yes, what they're doing is commendable in many ways. These guys, like most soundtrack producers, have gotten a lot of flack from us (deserved flack, mind you). They've learned and re-learned that the 30 minute CD is a pariah, and they've learned that through bitch-posts like the one above.
Not an easy thing to want to listen to, right or wrong.
And how easy is it to ignore such things? Think Jar-Jar Binks. George Lucas will go down to his grave defending that character. He will hear none of it. But Varese? They've taken it on the chin repeatedly - and they should have, don't get me wrong - but that's how they've gotten this message, and they ARE hearing it. Instead of sputtering the usual "less is more" spin, which actually argues for choosing to limit the released music, they are demonstrating that they are trying to put out as much of it as they can . . . so much so that they're really beyond criticism for the incompleteness of Total Recall and The Omen.
Now we know it's because they can't, not because they actually think it's better, because of what they're doing, and what they're not saying anymore.

Granted that The Omen is not complete, but what is still missing from The Final Conflict? I don't remember any missing cues right now, though I admit that it's been years since I've seen the picture.posted 12-05-2001 01:17 PM PT (US)

Oh by the way Omen II sounds great. The album re-mastering is a big improvement over the original release.Hearing the original score for Damien gives me a different perspective of the music much like Jaws when it was released by Decca.

Yay! I got my copy during lunch and just skimmed some of the album. It's great to have the re-recorded tracks sound so pristine. The original film tracks are quite cool in their heavier use of electronics and smaller orchestra and chorus - it sounds more intimate and almost more chilling because of that! So, here's a question: if one were to craft a "Best of" collection of music from Goldsmith's three OMEN scores, what tracks would you include? It's tough, mainly because I think all of THE FINAL CONFLICT is brilliant and I'd be hard-pressed to choose only a handful of cues. And would you assemble the tracks as suites or mix them up in a random order?
