Now that the Varese-MCA licensing deal has expired and the many of the unsold Conan the Barbarian albums have been destroyed, I think it's time to retire that recording forever.
Basil has expressed that he's not entirely happy with the recording, and the more I listen to the album, I feel the same way. The performance, for the most part, is fairly acceptable, but has plenty room for improvement. The trumpet section is noticeably way over their heads in "Battle of the Mounds."The main problem with the album is the recording, which has very little dynamics, making everything just sound "loud." Yes, it's a loud score in places, but some things should sound louder than others. Take "Battle of the Mounds" again, where at the end of the cue we have a guy pounding the crap out of some drums. The problem is that the ferociousness was lost somewhere in the recording process.
I think it's time for Poledouris to dust off his music and re-record this sucker. Hire the LSO, a couple dozen extra french horn players, a chorus, and Dennis Sands to record it. I think we'd have quite the album!
I'd shell out sixteen bucks for it.

I agree completely. The performance and sound of the original is far from satisfactory. The orchestra isn't really that good, and there are some balance problems with the choir and brass section. It is time for a re-recording (preferebly of the entire score)
with a top-notch orchestra and a decent choir. This great score deseves a great performance.SFT

I have a feeling Varese may dish out a re mastered DELUXE EDITION.In doing so they may even add more music!
Would you still buy it?

If any score deserves to get one, it's Conan! Here's hoping.

I would buy the same recording again (Vareses recent remastered releases (rrr) have great sound), but I'd prefer a good re-recording, too. Bring it on!

I think re-mastering Conan won't do much good. Start out with crap and you'll end up with crap. If anybody knows how to turn crap into something good, please let me know...
