After indulging myself this weekend with the film HIGH FIDELITY. (I absolutely think that movie kicks total ass, especially being a music buff.) And as many of us have done in the past, perhaps presently, I have indulged in the very "subtle art" as John Cusack puts it, of making a tape for someone special to me. Romantically speaking. Nowadays I guess it would be a cd-r. Many times these expressions that I have given have included filmmusic pieces. What personal favorites have you included on your "tapes" that have expressed the poetry of your heart to that significant someone?I have used Horner's LEGENDS OF THE FALL and GLORY of course (see profile), Newman's SCENT OF A WOMAN, Davis and Holdrige's BEAUTY AND THE BEAST: OF LOVE AND HOPE, William's JURASSIC PARK, SUPERMAN and EMPIRE OF THE SUN, Barry's INDECENT PROPOSAL (not that I was trying to make one at the time), Rota's GODFATHER III and Menken's BEAUTY AND THE BEAST and ALADDIN to name a few.
What are some of your personal faves that you've given?

Go with "The Demise of Mrs. Baylock" from The Omen and say it's the most romantic thing you've ever heard. Then you'll either never see each other again or you'll have kinky sex. There's no middle ground.

No Lux, although RAPTOR ATTACK would be very appropriate to put on an "ex-tape" or perhaps an autobiographical tape or perhaps even a tape from the bedroom that just finished playing that OMEN track Nicolai just spoke of, I am speaking of William's more soothing tracks on that disc like "A Tree For My Bed". Any of the piano renditions of the main theme to JURASSIC PARK can be very romantic.

The shower-scene cue from PSYCHO is, without a doubt, the most romantic piece of music ever composed.Excuse me now, I have to go back to stuffing my bird collection...

Hi Lightborne. I see a few of our fun, colorful members took your
thread in a rather different direction.
I may try to ease it back into its original direction. Like you, I love
some of the romantic themes from Legends of the Fall. What melody.
To me it’s melody that puts the romance into romance. Other lovelies
are: Robin and Marian, Somewhere In Time, Now Voyager, An Affair
To Remember, Romeo and Juliet (several versions), Jane Eyre, Feather Suite from Gump and Brian’s Song. (I hear that Legrand’s main melody will be used a few
times in the new Brian’s Song.)posted 11-30-2001 09:46 PM PT (US)

PPLLUUUEEeZZEE! All the young STUDS that populate this Board, and none of you can think of what should be placed on a romantic compilation??? Ahem, Studs Shaun, JJH, Wedge, Lou, Sir Timmer, and all the rest, can't you think of some film music to "WOO" a date?? If romance is dead, we're doomed to extinction, you know.
NP 13th Warrior..not too romantic, I know.

1) Goldenthal's love theme from Final Fantasy is great. Especially if you pay attention to his commentary on the DVD... explaining each intricate detail of the choice of notes, chord progressions, and instruments is enough to send any soul soaring.2) Goldsmith's love theme from Supergirl.
3) Ilia's theme from Star Trek: The Motion Picture. Hands down one of the best.
4) Barry's music from Out of Africa is great...
5) Barry's Swept by the Sea has some very, very lovely moments.
6) Horner's by-the-numbers love theme from Krull is great, even if it is by-the-numbers.
7) Williams' love theme from Superman. Geesh, isn't this obvious folks? One of the very best!
8) JNH's Prince of Tides - awesome love theme material. Heart warming.
I could go on...

In as much as I feel Joan's comments are somewhat challenging, (indirectly albeit), I feel compelled to responds with my selections of unabashedly romantic (little "r") music. And in defense, would also like to add that this post might have garnered more response if any guy here really thought it would do any good.... (But as this tends to be a heavily male-trafficked site....listing your favorite romantic soundtracks here would be akin to the monthly "10 hot tips to get him to notice you" in Redbook....)
With respects to composers, as each composer has their individual romantic voice, rather than pin-pick specific tracks, I have chosen full albums which I believe to representitive to some of the composer's finest romantic work:

Rob Roy - Carter Burwell
Much Ado About Nothing - Patrick Doyle
Passion of Mind - Randy Edelman
Sommersby - Danny Elfman
Dangerous Beauty - George Fenton
Medicine Man - Jerry Goldsmith
Bicentennial Man - James Horner
Wyatt Earp - James Newton Howard
Don Juan DeMarco - Michael Kamen
Moll Flanders - Mark Mancina
Victor/Victoria - Henry Mancini
Aladdin - Alan Menken
Legend of 1900 - Ennio Morricone
American Beauty - Thomas Newman
The Piano - Michael Nyman
Incognito - John Ottman
Kimberly - Basil Poledouris
Emma - Rachel Portman
The 6th Day - Trevor Rabin
White Squall - Jeff Rona
Big - Howard Shore

Summer Place (Steiner), Laura (Raskin and Laura’s theme from Jarre),

Good call Joan (Mom
), but I would say most of what I would suggest has already been said in the above postings so I'm going to have to go classical...Rhapsody On A Theme By Paganini - Rachmaninoff
Scheherazade - Rimsky Korsakov
Claire De Lune (piano or orchesttral version) - Debussy
The Lark Accending - Vaughan Williams
Bolero - Ravel....how did anybody miss dis one out?!
....and where the hell do I start with Tchaikovsky?

...and Mom, if it was me n'you we'd have t' trip the light fantastic to Stauss's Blue Danube (don't get smutty idea's people, I'm talking about a WALTZ!)

Oh, and why not throw in John Barry's gorgeous music for The Beyondness Of Things and Eternal Echoes, both of which are more than up for the job

In my defense of this topic posting, it was geared towards those who have ever done this for someone. That is...put filmmusic on a compilation cd for someone special. Those who had no experience in this really didn't need to feel obligated to post a reply to it.I didn't know that ROMANCE was out this year. It's attitudes like this that deem this site to appear to be heavily trafficked by disgruntled lonely males who appear to have no life outside of sitting in front of their monitors. Angry and listening to Jerry Goldsmith's RAMBO scores so they can feel like real men. I feel somewhat insulted by the assumption that the males of this board are like that. And if you possess this disgruntled worldview, I would research a little more about the moniker I chose to take then, Lancelot.
I will conduct my life in different manner. And now , back to the new December "top ten list" in my Redbook.
