Not soundtrack related, but something I'm sure everyone will love. I just found this on a dvd website I browse.

11.16.01 STAR WARS SPECIAL EDITIONS - VER. 2.0

George Lucas has admitted in an interview that will appear in next week's issue of TV
Guide that he's filmed all new scenes (and continued effects work) for Star Wars,
The Empire Strikes Back and Return Of The Jedi. He plans to insert them
into the original trilogy, presumably for the DVDs, once work has been completed on
    Episode III.

This isn't surprising at all; I've always expected Lucas to dick around with the original trilogy even more since he's worked on the new films.

If he's gonna do that, though, the least he could do is take out that change he made to Greedo shooting at Han Solo - that was uber-lame.

I'm sure some of the changes he's doing is to make the continuity work between all six films - since he's mucking around with what he had originally said in the first trilogy and screwed it up with The Phantom Menace. (Didn't Obi-Wan say that Yoda trained him? So who the hell was Qui-Gon??)

booo ! More stupid Greedo shoots first scenes :-(

I won't be happy unless the original films are on the dvd too, a la ET.

My guess is he will insert sequences on Coruscant. The Emperor on his home turf was a glaring omission from the original storyline...when considered in the entire context of the story.

I've always wondered how the films would play out...while Anakin's, ObiWan's and Yoda's story arcs will be fluid, the Emperor would seem to disappear until the final film (other than the brief commonication he has with Vader in ESB)

The Greedo bit was lame...but I thought all the other additions were worthwhile.

    Here's what Lucas should do.....
Release only ONE definitive DVD release of ALL six films in one set, maybe in 2004 or 2005. Each film will have two discs. On disc one will be the original, special and definitive versions of each film (meaning the original version, the versions for the 1997
rereleases and whatever he's planning to reshoot). Maybe there isn't enough room on one disc for that. Maybe it could be a branching DVD! You could pick at the beginning menu which version you want to see, and the disc compiles the right scenes. Fox has done very well with this branching technology, and I think Lucas would be a hero in everyone's mind to release all the versions this way.

And then on disc two would be all the documentaries, deleted scenes and such.

Also: GEORGE, PLEASE PUT ISOLATED SCORES ON EACH FILM!!!!!

ATTN George Lucas: E.T. will released on DVD in both the original and the "remastered" (?) version. Do the same with Star Wars!

I would love Lucas to death if he had the common sense to put the original versions on the DVD just like E.T.

He can muck around all he wants as long as the original versions arent lost.

btw - lame additions - Greedo shooting, and Luke screaming!

    Here's hoping.

If he has the common sense. He hasn't done anything yet, so the "past tense" wouldn't apply here. While I'm not optimistic, I'm willing to give the guy a chance.

Lucas can do anything he wants as long as we have the original versions as well.

Speaking for myself, I'll love any new footage with the Emperor.

Actually, I'm all in favor of the creation of even more elaborate Special Editions. It's like having three trilogies instead of two. Think about it ... when you sit down with your kids or grandkids and Star Wars for the first time, you can watch:

    1. The Classic Trilogy
    2. The Prequel Trilogy
    3. The Special Edition Trilogy

And it'll all make perfect sense.

I find it interesting how so many people are eager to criticize Lucas for making changes to the original films or for decisions he made with the story of Phantom Menace.

Unlike any movie franchise in history--this is a universe of his own creation, from the characters, to the world, to the technology.

We're not talking a committee here, who went through and polished the film and made changes were they saw fit. If this is how he wants...so be it. We think the Greedo bit is lame...I'm sure he had reason. As Dan said, I am inclined to trust the man's judgement.

All of us, myself included feel so close to the Star Wars mythos that we view changes as sacrilegious...but truly, it is as if God came down and tweaked the bible a bit.

Not as long as he can continue to get richer selling folks the same thing over and over and over again. If I had bought all the different iterations of the SW movies and their soundtracks I'd have what... 4 versions of each. I'll go see episodes 2 and 3 once or even twice if they're worth it but Mr. Lucas ain't gettin no more of cash from me no matter how much he tweaks and repackages the these things.

    Likewise.

Lucas should re-shoot the end of ROTJ, so Vader doesn't die but instead he and Luke move to Detroit and set up a used car dealership called "Skywalker & Son" where they use Leila on the Television commercials.

I think this is terrible news. What are they going to do? Replace the stop-motion animation (taun-tauns, At-At's, and At-St's) and the beautiful hand-done matte paintings? I think they should leave the original Star Wars trilogy alone instead of screwing with it.....Why in the hell tamper with perfection and replace artistic and surreal visual effects with cartooney creatures and video game-esq backgrounds? I just think it's wrong.

Is that Leia's other sibling? Leila? If Lucas is indeed shooting new footage for the old films, it's probably a good thing to fit this Leila character in there, so that when he does change the ending, as Richard has requested, it'll all make perfect sense.

One thing that's been nearly confirmed: Lucas will shoot new scenes with the Emperor and Vader having conversations (via that video-hologram thingy) to be placed in STAR WARS: A NEW HOPE.

Also, I would expect them to replace the "orangutan-eyes" Emperor in THE EMPIRE STRIKES BACK with the real one.

Wow. Didn't expect such a heated conversation about new footage. Now don't anyone get me wrong either. I love the original. I still think these are among the best films ever made. And I'd love to have a choice of versions, once released on dvd. But incorporating footage of the Emporer into the originals would be a nice touch, for continuity's sake. And though some things, such a Greedo shooting first, may not have been the best choice, come on... the new visuals for the Death Star battle are excellent. The Falcon taking off. Even when Solo runs into the whole army of troopers. This just shows the extent of the size of the empire which is more was not really seen in the original.

Just to make this film score related: any idea if Lucas will ask John Williams to score any of the new scenes or will he track existing music over them?

Enough with the post-release revisionism, George! Do we really want the '90s era Lucas who gave the world Jar Jar to "improve" on the work of the 70's era Lucas who was nominated for several Academy Awards? I think NOT. They are not in the same creative league. If you require proof, download the new "Titanic" AOTC trailer and weep for what could have been. FSM called the new trailer "laugh-inducing" and I, sadly, must concur.

Judging a film from a trailer in laugh-inducing actually. Lucas builds a love story in and people are quick to rip the man to shreds--consider though that the love angle will be critical in (what I assume will be) his emotional breakdown. That needs to be established before for it to have full resonance.

Again though--this is how he wants it to be. You may love the film in its original incarnation, but if the tweaks bring the movies closer to his original vision, then I'm not one to criticize.

Frankly I'm excited to see Episode II, the trailers look interesting. It was one man's opinion over at Film Score Monthly, not the whole magazine.

It's Lucas's movies and he has the right to do what he wants to fullfill his original vision. If his extra footage helps bind the story then I'm all for it. If not well I still have the original Laserdisc boxed set and I'm not that picky on sound as long as it is in Stereo and surround.

Actually, I find some of the balances on the CAV Star Wars box set much more satisfying than the overly bassificated Special Edition versions.

...okay, the SE is in 5.1, but the CAV box set sounds great already.
