I finally was able to see the movie last night and, altough I REALLY wanted to like it, can only say it's quite awful. The musical score is also a mess - noise, bombastic, overbearing and obvious to death...
Of course I am talking about Ralph Bakshi's incomplete version of the two first books, done in 1978.
I found a really hilarious critic about it HERE!... Have a good laugh!

And lets hope that the new version rocks!

This "film" was on in the video store I was browsing through last night. I wasn't watching it (all that terrible rotoscoping...YUCK)but I could hear it and boy were the voices annoying. Can't wait to see the new one in December. It looks truly amazing.

The German dub isn't nearly as horrible (and they even corrected some errors that were made in the English version, like the Saruman/Aruman confusion). It has it's flaws, but it still gives you something of a Tolkien feeling. But the English voices ruin about everything there's left.
But the score IS a masterpiece.
BTW, I don't agree with all of the points in that review (I've read it several times during the last few years): I've never heard "sappy pseudo-cheerful woodland Elf-music" in the whole film, and the Elves aren't any brighter than the others (except that Legolas is wearing white clothing). Or the bit about the cave troll in slow motion...of course Tolkien never wrote something about slow motion, but they have to leave the director SOME artistic decisions. I think that part worked rather well. Or the complaint about the Orcs singing - it isn't even said that the ORCS are singing, it's just part of the soundtrack (and there'll be a LOT of singing in Shore's score).
I agree that the film is VERY flawed and nearly unbearable with the English voices. I still like the German version, despite its flaws. But I do think that the people who wrote that review tried way too hard to find even more flaws than there are.

Rosenman was able to creat some quite good passages and themes, but they are most of the time ruined by his weak maneirismos - many of them can also be found on his cheesy STAR TREK IV and ROBOCOP 2 scores.
The guy seems to be unable to bind his score decently, always relying on those incredible cheesy and poor musical "bridges"!

Leonard Rosenman's score for The Lord of The Rings is a timeless masterpiece. If I would make a list of my ten favorite soundtrack CDs, Intrada's release of this magnificent music would be among my first choices. It's a spiky and edgy score, unconventional (about how many film scores can you say that?) and inventive. Film scores don't get any better than this.NP: Arnold Schönberg Piano Concerto

But my opinion is about the score as it plays as music; I freely admit that it couldn't help the movie either. Practically everything in that review is quite true, the movie is like a train wreck. The culprit is here clearly Bakshi (never particularly good at developing characters and long stories). Zaul Zaentz, one of the finest independant producers (Amadeus) in Hollywood, personally got the film rights from Tolkien, and he wanted to produce the best possible Lord of the Rings. Instead, practically everthing went wrong with this production, and finally, they were all broke and just had to get the thing out, no matter whether it was finished or not. Zaentz is taking much care to get it right this time, since he's also producing the upcoming Peter Jackson version.[Message edited by Nicolai P. Zwar on 11-19-2001]

Though I still maintain that the middle passage of the Mithrandir theme is a 1:1 ripoff from Holst's Jupiter. But it's still great.NP: Bound (Don Davis)

The score is a masterwork. Rosenman's mastery of modern musical language gave the world of Tolkien a fascinating aural representation. It's both a great listen and a supportive muscle in the film; just look at how it provided an ominous, agitated pulse to the activities of the Ringwraiths and Orcs. The movie itself is technically apt but truncated and lacking in spirit.

Well I guess I would like Rosenman's mediocre score for LORD OF THE RINGS much more if I haven't listened to STAR TREK IV and ROBOCOP 2 first...I mean, all those cheesy and incredible poor musical bridges he likes to use all the time would at leat sound original on LOTR.
Too bad...

Well, either your commentary or the link (I thought it COULD have been yours since your profile says you're a journalist, which has a broad definition in this day and age) which has no signature apparently. Isn't it flattering that I thought you were capable of such an extensive review, though?
Oh, and one more thing, as far as me being a "mate" (I see you're from Brasil and that is Australian jargon, is it not?), I think the correct term of endearment would be a "shiela" unless I do look like a "mate" in my profile. I guess I need to submit a bathing suit photo like you so that there is no mistake, eh?
