    Guys,

What if VARESE SARABANDE Announced a Deluxe expanded score by Jerry Goldsmith of ALIEN!

I dont know, It just struck me that this could be a reality soon.

Its in the air. First with Total Recall, Aliens, The Omen Trilogy, This could be happening soon.

I just had a vision taht this may be in devlopment for an early 2002 release..

I hope this happens. With ALIENS rounding up recently this could be possible ..... I wish!

With so many Goldsmith scores on their list already, AND Horner's Aliens, I wouldn't be surprised if they do this one as well. I certainly hope they will - the full score is much better than the Silva album, but the sound quality on both the Silva and the DVD iso is poor.

That would be cool and I'd buy it in a New York minute. So far all the DEs have been scores recorded in Europe.

What would be the logistical dificulties of them releasing an expanded The Boys from Brazil which was also done in Europe?

There is so much great music I want to hear that is missing on current sound track album.

Asides from the new "Main Title" Goldsmith wrote and the "Sleeper" motif, what is actually missing from the CD? Other than those two cues, I don't remember that there was anything from Goldsmith's score missing right now.

Actually there is quite a few cues missing from the Silva release. Most of it covers the discovery of the alien ship on the planet, alot of the strings that Horner used so well in Aliens. The main title used in the film sounds like they spliced together a few of the original cues.

I wouldn't be suprised if Alien did come out on Varese. Remember though it all depends on who still has the rights to issue these scores. Silva may still hold the release rights.

I agree w/Mark the Silva Co. still has the rights to the Alien sdtk. However anything can change. Thanks.

Well, Silva also had the rights to DAMIEN: OMEN 2, but those tracks are included on Varese's DeLuxe edition.

There's quite a lot of unreleased material. The original score as heard on the DVD's first iso score track runs 64 minutes (counting The Landing twice, as it is used again for the take-off sequence). Like Mark said, it has much more "discovery" music, but there are unreleased bits throughout the whole score, like for the scene when the grown-up Alien attacks it's first victim, or the (gorgeuous) second half of The Droid.

And that's without the additional 30 minutes of alternates used in the film, though some of those include the pieces from Freud and the Hanson symphony (and it seems to me that the climax cue in the shuttle is the same as the original version, but I think I've never compared them directly).

And I'm still waiting for a complete Great Train Robbery. After years of my demanding it, Varese finally had the great idea to remaster Final Conflict, so perhaps they'll also make this wish come true.

Yep, and the sound on Alien is really poor. Just think about a remastered edition where you can recognize all those weird instruments.

I would have to seriously doubt Varese would release a score that another label still had rights to. I imagine Silva's rights ran out.

In this case, I'd say this is a good sign, then:

    Keep your fingers crossed.

It's hard to predict what scores will be released but I would imagine we will see more Goldsmith from Varese. Based on what has been released so far I would guess that the majority of scores will be before the 90's. Maybe they could do an expanded Basic Instinct but I suspect we will probaly get some of the ones you are hoping for Marian.

Plus you have to throw in FSM, you never know what treat they have in store for us.

An remastered edition of the score would be nice, it just would be an odd move, given how definitive the DVD isolated score tracks is (a CD can hold 80 minutes, while the DVD isolated score tracks run about 95 all together).

Alien has always sounded pretty shrill, actually. I've never heard a sound mix of the film in which the music doesn't sound like that. I wonder, however, and I may be pelted with stones for bringing this up as a possibility, if the overly dry, unattractive sound of this recording was a production decision during the scoring sessions. It certainly gives the music an uncomfortable sound, and this is not the kind of score that one relaxes to.

    Speaking of sickly-sounding albums...

I remember when I heard Basil Poledouris' Honor and Glory promo, which features a suite from Conan the Barbarian, which I had since gotten used to listening with Varese's remastered and expanded edition. At the first note of that glorious bombast, hitting me with that horrid, preremastered sound, it immediately gave me a sense of nostalgia for that old, crappy MCA (which never sounded all that good to begin with) tape that I wore the hell out of in my Walkman at high school...

Well I guess it wouldn't hurt to email Varese & request an expanded Alien CD. If they did (hoping) u it should be a commercial release. Thanks.

I think an expanded Aliens should be a 2CD set with the original score and the cuts as heard in the movie. Unfortunately, the licensing for that might be difficult or impossible because of the DVD isolated tracks fiasco, composer ego, Hanson's estate, etc.

Still, I think that if one does undertake the ultimate Alien disc, I can't imagine doing it any differently or there'd be complaints. Hint: it would analogous to combining Rhino's 2001 disc and the Varese Alex North disc into one set.

As for the alternates used in the final movie, I wouldn't necessarily need them on a remastered CD. Most of them aren't that outstanding, so the CD I made from the DVD iso score is enough for me. But a remastered version of the original score would be great - I don't think the poor sound could possibly have been intentional (at least not for the score as a standalone listen). It's very hissy, too.
